Kaituna Whitewater Sessions

In 2011 Mike Dawson(NZ) was selected to represent New Zealand in the London Olympics for Slalom kayaking. In this project he has teamed up with Czech national Vavrinec Hradilek in his pre olympic selection training in a quest to prepare for the games and progress the sport of slalom kayaking beyond the imaginations of the bravest slalom racers. Whitewater Sessions on the Kaituna was a project designed by the pair to showcase slalom kayaking to the world in a different light and also help them on thier quest for gold at the London Olympics. This section of whitewater is commercially rafted at restricted flows of between 200 and 500 on the gauge but they set out to race down it in composite (carbon, fiberglass) kayaks 3 times the maximum commercial rafting level known to the locals as "Open Gates". One obstacle at the end of the race course is called Trout Pool Falls, a rapid outside the scope for commercial rafting at any flow and seldom run at this flow even by the best whitewater kayakers in plastic kayaks designed for this sort of whitewater. These two stepped up and ran the falls at the end of the mentally and physically draining course. At Osaka airport atm, waiting for my connecting flight to Amsterdam, flying back home to cold wintery flat-lands! Had a mean time in New Zealand! Short but awesome trip!

Back to the Netherlands to finish my studies and than will see what 2012 brings me!

Kaimais creeking

The other day we headed up to the Kaimais with a big crew of awesome paddlers. We were planning to run the Tuakpoi but as the water level wasn’t perfect we headed up to another river nearby. The Mangakarangaranga is a sick little run with a couple of sick rapids, with the Abyss being one of the greatest. The run ends just above McClarens Falls and continues in the Wairoa, which is a really sick run as well when there is a bit more water than usual.

As the rain keeps falling down the creeks were still in the next day. Together with Lu Urwin, Tyler Fox, Kenny Mutton, Jamie en Sam Sutton, Louise Jull and Maxi we headed up to the Mangawrewa I was very impressed about the stunning scenery in this gorge! The white water was really awesome toom, really continuous, not many eddies and a couple blind corners leading into some swt drops. Fun!

Mean times! Stoked to got to do some creeking in the Kaimais with a sick crew! Just a few days left before I fly out back to the Netherlands.

NZ 2011/ 2012

I flew into Auckland just before Xmas, to spend about a month in summery New Zealand! Although the weather hasn’t been very summery so far as it pretty much rained every single day I have been here. On Xmas day we had fine weather and I had a great time spending my second Xmas on the Southern Hemisphere.

After Xmas Mike and I headed up North to the west coast of Coromandel to spend a couple of days camping and fishing at the coast. We walked up the Pinnacles which was a great walk, did some stand up paddle boarding and cruised around.

On the 30th we picked up Vavra from the airport and we headed North again to the east coast. We ate some sick burgers near Cooks beach and went to the Cathedral Cove which was very pretty. Due to the weather we decided to head back to Tauranga that same evening.. Definitely a good call as the next day the whole area was flooded.

The good part of all the rain is that there are heaps of rivers in the Kaimais that are running. Vavra, Mike and I headed up to the Mangakarangaranga, which was a sick little run! The surf has been up to and although the weather sucks we have spend some awesome times in Tauranga. Just after a big cyclone we headed up for a deep sea fishing trip with the Muttons, which was really sick, despite I got seasick once more! We caught about 14th fish together and had a sick dinner in the evening!

On the 7th we headed back to the Bach in Rotorua, which has been sick too. Paddling the Kaituna River in slalom boats, doing some more Kaimai Creeks, having pot-luck dinners and bbq’s! Life is good! The Kaituna has been on open gates for about 2 weeks now, and we had the luck to run it in our slalom boats one day. Pretty scary not to break Mike his old slalom boat, or get a beat down at the waterfall, but awesome fun!

Adidas Sickline World Championships 2011

The kiwi boys dominated the Sickline Race today with Sam Sutton taking the top spot of the Adidas Sickline Extreme Kayak World Champs once again this year, followed by Mike Dawson in 2nd. Sam had a sick run winning his title by 2 seconds from Mike Dawson. Slalom paddler Paul from Germany won the bronze medal.

It was a really tight race this year as well in the mens as in the women's.. heaps of great whitewater and slalom paddlers came down a bit earlier this year to get some practice time on the Wellerbrucke section on the Oetztaller Ache River. The slalom paddlers just had their peak of the season the World Championships Slalom in Slovakia and were in top form this year..

Due to some snowfall and 25 degrees weather the river had some juicy flow which dropped down just in time for the race and provided us a great flow this year..

This year 8 girls made the step to pay the 150 euro entry fee and race on the qualifier course of the race.. At least 5 off the girls has been running Wellerbrucke and some of us even the section above.. still the organization don't let us race on the Wellerbrucke section... Heaps of discussions have been going on about this subject.. at least it has been approved this year and there was a women's division, and for the first year there has been more than 1 women been in the top 90!

That the girls wouldn't be capable of running the Wellerbrucke section is in my opinion bullshit.. and there where guys swimming, coming down backwards.. one guy even missed the Champions Killer and went right of it through the Sieve!! None of the girls has done this!! Maybe we have run the section less and we haven't try to race on it yet but at least we all have been sweet running it! I think it's time for Adidas to bring a women's division and get more girls here racing for a real crown on the top of the Wellerbrucke rapids!!

Sickline Training

The Sickline Extreme Kayak World Champs unfolding next weekend in the city of Oetz, Austria. Heaps of paddlers starting to arrived to get some training time on the Wellerbrucke section of the Oetz River.

Some sick lines and nasty swims are shown so far by the many paddlers who have gettered. The race will kick off on Friday with the Qualifier and only about 40 people will go through to the next round that day.

Besides being on the water we have been doing some side tracks to enjoy the beautiful area and sunny weather here in Oetz. Check out some of the photos taken so far..

After coaching a week in Slovenia, I headed to Bratislava for a couple of day and after to the French Pyrenees to coach another week for Europagaai.

We had heaps of rain once we arrived in the Pyrenees and the water was super high.. and kind of to high to paddle with beginner paddlers. Luckly the camping owner helped us heaps whit sussing some plan B's.

As thanks for all his help we gave him a bottol of Pastis, t-shirt and a handmade level indicator.

Every morning the camping owner came to the water to check the water, and as indicator he used some rocks in the river. So we came on the idea to give him his own Gave de Oloron level indicator!

It was a bit more work than we expected but the result is pretty good :).

Hey here's a little edit of the Teva Outdoor Games in Italy. We made the clip already a while a go but I haven't posted it yet.. The quality isn't great.. not sure why.. :).

This event is one of my favorite of the year! The place where its held is such a awesome place.. very Italian!
The cool thing is that you start high up the mountains for the steep creek race and ending mellow in the Ivrea city center on an artificial course.. although this course looks really easy it's quite pussy and hard to make your lines! The organization of this event is really good too.. the organizers are super friendly, there is amazing food for the competitiors with 3 dinners and lunches.. and in town there are great Galato shops!
This year we were entered with 7 girls.. with 10 girls they will give the chicks price money as well.. so 3 more chicks to enter next year!

ICF Freestyle World Championships 2011

After the Teva Extreme Outdoor Games in Italy.. I drove with Teva Athlete Anna Hübner towards Germany. We slept at her parents' house and drove to Plattling the next day for the Freestyle World Championships 2011. When arriving in Plattling the weather was great and it was already busy.

It was a big change after paddling a creek boat for such a long time.. I haven't been much in my freestyle boat the last year and I could notice this during my first trainings. It felt a little bit ridiculous waiting for more than 20 or 30 minutes in the eddy for one ride in the hole, where I couldn't do much. The water level dropped a lot on Wednesday and Thursday and the hole was really shallow and flushy.. at least less waiting time in the eddy!

On Friday the water came up again to a level of 180, which was perfect.. The country trainings started this day and I had an awesome training with 4 Dutchies in the eddy for 30 minutes.. I started to enjoy it again heaps! Finally I could throw some moves; Loops, Space Godzillas, Cartwheels, Splitswheels and some McNasty attempts..

On Monday was the opening ceremony followed by a pasta party in the streets of Plattling. The next day the show started on the river banks of the Isar River with the women's kicking off the event. My first ride felt alright.. I had about 5 loop attempts as I wanted to get my air loop and Space Godzilla, but didn't pull it out.. made a split wheel but apparently wasn't vertical enough and had a mcnasty attempt where I at least stayed in the hole with but the loop was to sideward.. In my second run my score were higher but it felt worse..

I just missed the cut of 20 on a couple of points and ended up 22nd.. couldn't be much disappointed as I haven't done much freestyle lately.

My sister did well in the competition.. after the first round she was in 9th place with in each run a loop and Space Godzilla.. The first cut of the woman's wasn't very hard to make, but there was definitely once again a gap between the once who have trained and the once who didn't.
One cool thing was that most of the women's tried to go for the bigger moves.. a lot of women getting better and better but it's hard to be consistent when you don't paddle much.. some were lucky in the competition, others weren't..

The men's where cool to watch! The European men's did well with James Bebbington, Peter Csonka and Gerd Serrasolses all in the finals, which will be today around 5pm.
The women finals are today, with Emily Jackson leading the finals followed by Claire o'Hara.
Emily Wall and Katya Kulkova who where the European favorites as they have been in Plattling for months training on the features both didn't make it to the finals.

The event was a lot different than the last Freestyle Worlds in Thun.. but than one was hard to beat anyways!
All by all it was a fun event..

Teva Outdoor Games, Italy

Back to civilization! Italy is sush a sweet place.. the little old villages and the lovely Italian culture and food. Italy is one of my favorite countries in Europe to go on holidays and enjoying the easy life.

The Teva Outdoor Games where once again a great succes. It was my second time in this place and I have enjoyed it even more than last time. The water was a bit low but a good change from last year where the water was really high. The race kicked off high in the mountain on the Cuisella River where the individual steep creek race is held. A lot of carnage before the race showed that the race isn't easy.. The course is about 6 to 7 minutes long of low volume steep creek and full of rocks, shyphons, and undecuts. It's a sick run!

The race started on Italian time.. 11.30am, so luckly we could sleep in after out mission from the USAto Prague to Italy. In the men's Mike Dawson had once more the fastest lines and I won the women's. The top 20 men's had another fight that day on the King's of the Falls section.. which was pretty scatchy this year, due to the low water level. Ron Fisher had the Fastest line, having a super clean line on the waterfall and smoking it till the finish.

Next morning were the team races on the top part of the course.. The Czech Team did really well winning the race by just a second a head of Team New Zealand. In the afternoon everybody headed down to Ivrea for some training on the whitewater course. At 10 o'clock night time the sprint team races took off which was awesome to watch as the course was lighted. I guess the germans team 1 took the win followed by the kiwi's in second again.

Next day were the individual sprints and slalom. Mike and me both winning both events having all the 3 wins so far. Sunday was the last event of the Teva Outdoor Games 2011, the boaterX. in the men's it was a hard fight with a close final.. in the end Michelle Ramazza took the win, closly followed by Sam Sutton in 2nd. In the girls it was Anna Hubner who touched the finish first with Jenny Chrimes in 2nd.

Sunday/ Monday I drove with Teva athlete Anna Hubner to Plattling for the Freestyle World Championships. A big change after creeking for a while.. it's such a different thing! It's really crouwded and you have to wait for about 20 minutes for one ride in the hole.. Plattling is nice but there isn't much to do around.. no mountains, city of nice little vilalges to watch.. since today we got a pass to go in the swimmingpool which has some jumps and slidge.. which would be fun! Moreover the weather is great today!
I had a couple of runs in the hole.. but i having a hard time trowing some moves :).. I especialy can not keep up with the bigger moves as mcnasty and phoenix monkey.. but having good times.. it's getting busier and busier which is fun on shore..

Day 2 - Teva Mountain Games

What up!

Friday were the qualifications of the Freestyle, which took the whole day.. As the water came up we had to wait 30 min, as they had to change the hole. The top 8 girls went through to the next round.. I just missed the cut becoming 9th.. I didn't brought my freestyle kayak, so hadn't had any practice run until the competition it self. First run I screwed up big times.. as I needed to get adjust to the Medium Rock Star, which was way to big for me.. all good though! Emily Jackson got in first place through to the next round with a sick run! Hard to beat for the other girls.. at the moment the girls just finish the semi-finals and the mens are still batteling to get through to the top 5!

Beside all the kayak events there is heaps to do and watch up here! Yesterday evening was the Slope Style which was super sick to watch! The dog jump comp kicked of yesterday too, which is funny as!
Yesterday was also the film premier of Rush Sturges his movie Frontier.. super sick!

Today in the morning we had the Down River race.. an almost 20 minute run down a class I river, which is super hard on your body. Nikki Kelly won the womens following by me in second and Adriene in 3rd. The mens was won by a guy who was paddling a modifide wavehopper which was hard to beat. Mike dawson got second followed by Isaac in 3rd.

So as I said the mens ar atm still battling in the freestyle.. Tomorrow is the 8ball and the rafting competition.

Day1 Teva Mountain Games - Homestake Creek

First day of the Teva Mounain Game is over and what a great day!

We had a bit more water than last year due to the great weather out here! The first race of the Teva Mountain Games started Thursday at 10am with the girls heading up the start line at first. There was a strong field of boaters this year in both men's and women's!

Adriene Levknecht smoked her first run and did the same in her second, winning the 2011 Teva Moutain Game steep creek! Adriene was definately rocking it yesterday! I was surprised how many practice runs she had the day before the race and even just the hour before her race run! surprised she didn't get tired at all.. I had a bit more training than last year on the course, running the course one and a half time this year ;). My first run was smooth but my strokes where really short and not efficient at all! I was so tired after the first run! The top of the second run was way better, I went slower but had longer strokes ad felt faster.. until I got at the harder part of the course where I felt really tired trying to boof over the first couple of holes. Had some backwards time in the middle part which slowed me down heaps and had some troubles at the bottom drop.. was quite surprised I still made it in 3rd place after that! So i the end I was gathered about my bad run but stoked ending up in 3rd place!

The men's was awesome to watch. Honza Lasko and Mike Dawson managed to paddle to a tie, both finishing with a time of 34.62 seconds, sharing the top step of the men's podium! Its pretty crazy they ended up in a tie. Mike had a really smooth fast first run.. funny thing was that it didn't looked like he was paddling very hard.. but he was just super smooth and efficient. Honza was in second after his first run and had a great second run down the course. Jakub Nemec got just behind those guys in 3rd place.

On the road again!

Back on the road again! It feels like I’m just home! The two weeks Netherlands went fast, but it was really sweet to catch up with everybody and being home for a little while..

So now I’m back in America for the Teva Mountain Games in Vail. The flight went all sweet and I had a very friendly lady beside me on the plane and an even nicer guy after the transfer in Washington ;). I arrived on the airport together with Mike Dawson and we head up to the car rental to get a sick SUV! It’s big enough to fit our kayaks inside, so really perfect. We hit the road and wanted to stop at the first fast food restaurants on the way to Vail… but what to choose, Burger King, Mc Donald’s, Wendy’s, Snackbar, Sub Way.. at exit 241 we finally decide and went for a fat juice burger at the Carl Jr Burgers place.. Yumm Yumm! Very satisfied (well not really) we went on and looked for a place to sleep the night.. after two crappy places we found a sweet as hotel which had a room for half the price and was including breakfast and the facilities of a Spa pool in and outside, swimming pool and a fitness area, but the most treasures of all a shower and two king size bed!! Great after being on the road, airports and planes for about 24 hours!

After an alright sleep (the jetlag keeps me away from 4am in the morning), we enjoyed the American breakfast and eat way too much.. luckily it’s all fat food so we will be hungry by lunch time anyways :).

We hit the road to Vail and enjoyed the stunning scenery! It’s good weather but there is still heaps of snow in the area, which makes the air a bit chilly but looks stunning! After checking in at the Sitzmark Lodge, we headed off to homestake creek.. We had a little bit more water and way lower temperatures than last year.. I was too tired and it was too cold for me but Mike and Nikki went down for a couple of runs, check out some photos..

The weather was so cold yesterday.. it was snowing heaps! Today the sun is shining and its about 20 degrees! I just got back from the river.. and did 1 run.. same story as last year ;).. probably will have another run tomorrow.. but see what the water level is doing as well..

Dutch Championships - Kajak Festival

The Dutch Championships a.k.a. ‘kajak festival’ unfolded last weekend on the artificial white water course Dutch Water Dreams in Zoetermeer. Around 100 competitors competed over the weekend in five different disciplines; Freestyle, BoaterX, Slalom, Down River and Canoe Polo. Most members of the Europagaai Freestyle Team competed in the first four disciplines.

Freestyle
The Freestyle competition kicked off on Saturday morning with the qualifications. It was a tide race on a fast wave/hole feature. At the end of the day was it Quérine Wegman who took the win followed by Martina in Second. Casper van Kalmthout dominated in the men’s and took home his 5th title. Tim Uneken ended in second place closely followed by Joery Radix. Remi had a unlucky final and ended in a 4th place. The Junior men’s got dominated by Lane with a point difference of 200 point to second place winner Bobby Groenewoud.

BoaterX

The Dutch BoaterX Championships was by far the most attractive for competitors. With a large field of competitors at the start it was a hard and excited race. The men’s final was represented by Remi Wegman, Rene Boom, Casper van Kalmthout, Raoul Collenteur, Bas Horstink and Emiel Beukenkamp. Rene Boom leaded the race till the finish, closely followed by Bas Horstink. In the end it was Raoul who made a sharp move and finished in second place followed by Bas in 3rd. Martina won the woman title.

Slalom
Olympic finalist 2008 Robert Bouten owned it in the slalom and won back the Dutch Title by beating Bas Wesselink. Claudia Leenders won the women’s with a couple seconds ahead of Martina Wegman, who raced her first Dutch slalom race! The artificial white water course is a copy of the Olympic course in Beijing and is a difficult course but great for slalom!

Down River
A trilling final in the Dutch Championships Down River. Heaps of foreigner paddler came all the way down for this event. In the end it was Sebastian Verhoef who won the Dutch title in the senior men’s. Jim Rovekamp won his second gold over the weekend in the Down River Race, same for Martina Wegman who ended just a couple seconds ahead of German paddler Brigit.

Canoe Polo
On a lake beside the white water course took a canoe polo event place. DKV Euros ended after their last game in first place. In the junior class was Odysseus to strong for Keistad Jeugd and Golden Goal.

Beside the races there was enough to happen for the spectators who came around.

Tramping rond Lake Waikaremoana

De laatste weken zijn erg snel gegaan met name als ik terug denk aan die 36 uur durende vlucht die ik binnenkort weer moet meemaken. Het is hier langzamerhand echt winter aan het worden met in de ochtend temperatuur van 3 graden en zelfs overdag komt het soms niet boven de 10graden. Gister hadden we wind van 120km/u en waren er twee bomen omgevallen op de weg naar de Bach. Één van de bomen had de elektriciteit must en kabels stukgeslagen waardoor we een dag zonder stroom zaten. De andere boom die op de weg was gevallen hebben we met een kettingzaag klein gemaakt en kunnen we gebruiken voor brandhout.

Meer dan een week gelden hadden we een drie daagse tramp gedaan rondom ‘Lake Waikaremoana’ in Te Urewera National Park. We hadden eigenlijk pas op het laatste moment besloten dat we deze wandeling zouden gaan doen, en moesten maandag ochtend haasten om op tijd te zijn voor de boot die we hadden gereserveerd.

Rond half 3 begonnen we onze wandeling we hadden de derde hut geboekt en moesten volgens de boeken 6 uur lopen naar onze hut. Aangezien het om half 7 al donker zou zijn moesten we dus flink doorlopen. Onderweg hadden we slecht 1 iemand gezien bij de tweede hut en toen we net voor het donker aankwamen bij onze hut waren er z’n 10 jagers in de hut, erg gezellig…

Aangezien we maandag z’n haast hadden, was onze tas niet heel compact en slim ingepakt. De volledige gasbrander hadden we beter thuis kunnen laten aangezien we de pannen, bestek en bekers waren vergeten.. de 2 liter houdbare melk, door miscommunicatie in de supermarkt, hebben we bij de eerste hut achter gelaten, 2kg minder! De kilo zware ananas hebben we de volgende dag in de ochtend opgegeten samen met de halve liter yoghurt. De verse 5 tomaten en 4 advocates hebben we tot de laatste hut meegesleept, en daar moeten weggooien aangezien deze verplet waren en niet meer eetbaar.. de 2 grote winterpenen, 600gram wraps, 2x crackers and cheese, 6 steaks, salamiworst, appels, pot pindakaas, brood, zak nacho chips, snoep, koekjes, mueslirepen, chocolade, nootjes… en de rest, hebben we gelukkig wel deels kunnen opeten.

Naast al het eten en de gasbrander hadden we ook nog twee slaapzakken, twee spijkerbroeken met riem, warmte kleding, deodorant, twee boeken, slippers en nog meer.. in ieder geval waren onze tassen vrij zwaar.

De wandeling daarin tegen was erg mooi, afwisselend langs het meer en door het dichte bos. De tweede dag waren we rond 7 uur opgestaan met een heerlijk groot ontbijt zodat onze tassen wellicht wat lichter zouden aanvoelen.. om 8 uur waren we weer onderweg voor de tweede dag. Onze dag zou 9 uur duren met een d-tour van een uur naar een waterval. Aangezien we meer tijd hadden deze dag zouden we het iets langzamer aan doen en hebben we in het meer gezwommen en een pauze gehouden bij de Waiopaoao hut die we tegen kwamen van een uur. Om 2 uur vertrokken we voor onze laatste kilometers die dag en zou het vanaf de Waiopaoao hut ongeveer 4 uur lopen zijn. Echter van 0 naar 1000 meter, dus alleen maar omhoog, omhoog, en nog meer omhoog. Na iets langer dan 2 uur lopen waren we al bij de hut, wat een geweldig uitzicht had! Helemaal met de zonsondergang iets later.

Na de tweede dag hadden Mike en ik beide blaren. Mike op zijn hiel en mijn grote teen aan de ene voet was verdubbeld en aan de andere voet kwam er een bloedblaar onder mijn nagel die mijn nagel omhoog van het vlees afdrukte en blauw was geworden. De laatste dag stonden we weer rond 7 uur op voor onze laatste dag. De laatste dag zou een korte dag zijn van 5 uur wandelen en voor ons dus z’n 2,5 á 3. Het laatste stuk was ook erg mooi en liep het pad op een hoogte van rond 900 meter door het bos en langs het meer, een mooi uitzicht dus. De laatste 30 minuten waren erg zwaar en deden mijn voeten echt heel pijn. De laatste 10 minuten hebben we beide op bloten voeten gelopen en waren we erg blij toen we eindelijk bij het eindpunt aankwamen.

Vanaf daar werden we weer opgehaald en terug naar onze auto gebracht, waarna we z’n 100km over een graffel weg + 2 uur rijden en een stop bij de supermarkt weer terug waren bij de Bach! Wat smaakte het verse avond eten goed die avond!

De overige dagen hebben we niet zo veel gedaan, bijna elke dag een slalom sessie, enkele keer naar de hotpools, River runs, Mike heeft wat mensen mee de rivier op genomen in een Topo duo, pizza’s uit de pizza oven, golven, we hebben Fast en Furious 5 gezien in de bioscoop, wat een goeie film is.. en verder de dagelijkse dingen :). Ik heb ook meegedaan aan de Nationale Slalom wedstrijd van Nieuw Zeeland.. meer hierover in mijn volgende update ;).

Freestyle Jam at Full James

Last Saturday I decided together with Lou Jull to enter the freestyle competition at Full James which unfolded last Sunday. It was the New Zealand selections for the World Championships in Plattling, Germany, which will be held in early June. Although the Worlds will be on a hole the NZL selection was on a fast dynamic wave and in fully kiwi style.

When we arrived it looked like the wave was really flussy and hard to make a single move on. Once on the water the wave was difficult but really sick. Not to many of the kiwi’s are too much into freestyle and it was more a gathering and fun event for most.

The event saw some sweet moves but mainly Blunts, Back Steps, spins, and a couple of other try on bigger moves as Donkey and Pistol Flips. At the end of the day it was Nick Winsitt who took the win, closely followed by last year winner Andy O’Connell and Tyler Fox in 3^rd.

The woman’s comp was interesting with 8 girls at the start, and most of them hadn’t done a lot of freestyle. Despite this the girls did pretty well making some spins and roundhouses. I won the comp with Polly Green coming in second and Toni George in 3^rd.

The event was well organized by Lu, Sophie, Tyler and a couple of others. Beside the comp there was as well a king of the wave and there where heaps of spot prices given away, like a Bungy jump, Jet ride, Raft trips and of course the Barny and Jordan Calendars..

It was a sweet event and it felt good to be back in a freestyle kayak after about two months :).

Buller Fest

The last two weeks in the Southern New Zealand Alps has been amazing! We headed down South on Thursday night and went straight to Murchison where the Buller Festival 2011 was held. The Buller Fest is all about catching up with each other and having a big party together. Friday, the first day of the event is the Boater Cross, which was scheduled to kick off at 12 noon. The race section was on the Lower Matakitaki which isn’t that extreme, but therefore brings a large field to the start line. The men’s boatercross final was a real crowd pleaser with a tight final with Mike Dawson winning the victory. The woman final was an unpredictable and exciting race, I leaded the final heat until the last moment where I unwillingly took an eddy and got overtaken by Leela Samuels and Lu Urwin becoming first and second.

Sunday was the slalom event, due to high water the course was a bit pussy and unpredictable but good fun! I attended the slalom race just for fun, as I only have been in a slalom boat on whitewater once before. I guess I had heaps of beginners luck at my first run styling the course and taking the win in the woman’s with 8 seconds over Lou Jull. My second run I lost my beginners luck with missing a roll and missing 4 gates.. luckily for me only best run counted so I won my first slalom race ever. At the end of the day there was a huge party in real kiwi style! Results can be found here.

Styx
The next morning we woke up early to drive up to the West Coast. A sick drive through the stunning scenery of NZL. Arriving in Hokitika we dropped of our gear at the campground and headed down to the River. Mike and Isaac did a quick heli run on the Arahura, and Louise and me met up with Phill and Collin Mac for a hike in on the Styx. The hike in was a little longer than expected as we ended up walking for over 2 and a half hours. The run was all good starting with some class V drops, then eases to class IV for a while and class III/II till the take out.

Arahura
Next day I headed up the Arahura with the same crew as the day before and had my first Heli Kayak trip and even first helicopter flight ever! Sick!!! The Arahura is one of the most enjoyed runs with great scenery, wild location and stunning whitewater. The Arahura is often described as one of the most fair West Coast rivers – what you see is what you get. The run is class IV – V. It was a pretty full on day and enjoyed it heaps.

Hokatika
The third day on the West Coast I paddled the Hokatika together with a large group of 13 boaters.. the Copper picked us up around noon and made us have another sick flight through the gorges through the river. The Hokatika was just a little harder than the Arahura as it had a bit more water in it which made it a bit more pushy. The run is another IV – V run once more through the beautiful gorges in the untouched wilderness of New Zeeland.

Whitecombe
The fourth day I needed a rest as the West Coast is pretty full on with consequential whitewater and long days. Together with Mike we flew up to a hut on the Whitecombe River. This was one of the sickest things I have done. Dando the chopper pilot flew us up from his house and dropped us at the hut where we stayed one night. We flew up for about 30 minutes seeing nothing and nobody except mountains and the river for more than 20 minutes. We made a little fire outside the hut and cooked the most delicious lamb on the fire, together with corn, crackers, cheese and wine ;). Next morning we woke up at 5.50am and made a little fire in the hut to cook our bacon and eggs and eat our melon and mango! Around 7.30 we walked down to the river for a sick early morning run. we expected a class III easy run, but as soon as we were on the river we realized that we were a bit higher up the river than we excepted. At the start there were some gnarly rapids which we portage some of them. All by all we did well and the run was sick! We arrived at the take out a bit after 11, ready to drive more south for the Citroen Extreme Race.

Citroen Extreme Race
The Citroen Extreme Race was such a wicked race! The rapid where the race is held on is such a good place to have a race on! Especially as we had high water flow of 200 cubic metres of water per second which made it a pushy and unpredictable roller-coaster ride down the minefield of holes. It was a tight race in the men’s with in the Final Jamie and Sam Sutton, Wills and Lukas. Jamie and Sam where so close to the win but in the end pushed each other out, and gave the victory to Lukas in first and Wills in second. Lou and me where the only girls racing this year and we had a tough fight too. Lou had the first place of the ramp but had a unlucky start making me leading the race at the start, at the half of the rapid I got spanned around in an eddy.. It was really tight till I got in the last hole at the bottom getting a small beat down making Lou passing me and claim the deserved victory!! Such a sick race though! Big thanks to the organization and the hospitality of Kelly and Roy!

Fiordland
Sunday Mike me and Wills headed South to Fiordland, the drive up there was beautiful and it was really lovely spending the day up there sightseeing the country. We stayed there one night but due heavy rain next morning we headed back. We did one hike up there but where so soaked and cold after one hour that we couldn’t be bothered to stay.

Mt Cook
Second last day in the South we drove to Mount Cook. We got there around 3.45pm and wanted to do a hike and maybe sleep in a hut. Unfortunate the huts where fully booked. We decided to hike up to the hut and hike back. The estimate time for the hike was 3,5 to 4 hours but we where sure we could track that down to 4 hours in total being back before dark. We walked up to the hut in 1,5 hour and back down in 1,5 hour too.. It was such a mint walk, going only straight up from 700m to 2000m! Beautiful scenery at the top as well! After the walk we drove to a hidden place to cook some fresh salmon on the barbie and drove towards Christchurch where we stayed for the night. Next morning we drove to the ferry and had a sick drive through the sounds! Stayed in Otaki that night at Lou her parents house and drove the next morning to Tauranga passing Bliss-Sticks and Rototua on our way.

It was such a sick trip to the South Island! Back at the bach at the moment having a couple of easy days.. enjoying heaps!

Mayor Island

Vorige weekeend was ik dus naar Mayor Island.. was echt heel vet! Vrijdag avond vertrokken we met een vissersboot naar het eiland. Er was een soort van cycloon aan de noordkant van het noord eiland en we hadden daarom een behoorlijke deining.. erg leuk het eerste uur, maar daarna begon ik toch echt zee ziek te worden! 2 uur land geconcentreerd op het water wat van alle kanten kwam. Op een geven moment kon ik een eens meer zien of de golven nou van links of rechts kwamen.

De vrouw van de caretaker van het eiland zei dat het één van de heftigere oversteek was die ze hadden. Wel tof om mee te maken, maar ik was erg blij om weer aan land te zijn! Toen de boot aanlegde moesten we nog met een klein bootje naar het eiland roeien, maar dat ging gelukkig snel. We kwamen aan in het donker en gingen vrijwel meteen naar bed.

De volgende ochtend werd ik wakker en aangezien het donker was had ik geen idee waar ik was beland. Toen ik mijn bedje uit kwam en naar buiten liep wist ik het Paradijs ;).. Het was er super mooi en het leek of we waren neergestort op een onbewoond eiland. Echter waren er een paar andere hutjes en stonden er een paar tentjes.

We zijn die ochtend eerst gaan wandelen naar het hoogste punt van het eiland. Onder weg zijn Abby en ik naar Honeymoon bay gelopen wat z’n 40 minuten om was en zouden daarna naar het hoogste punt lopen waar haar ouders rechtstreeks heen liepen (uur lopen). Abby en ik hebben de pas erin gezet en zijn in een uur naar honeymoon bay en het hoogste punt gelopen wat vrij stijl omhoog was. Via het hoogste punt liepen we naar de krater van de vulkaan van het eiland waar we via devils staircase heen moesten lopen. De wandeling was erg mooi, maar ook vermoeiend aangezien we ’s ochtends snel wat hadden ontbeten en er niet op hadden gerekend dat we 5 uur aan het lopen zouden zijn en we te weinig water en alleen een appel en muslireep bij ons hadden.

Na 5 uur lopen waren we blij om terug te zijn bij de bach, namen een snelle duik in zee en een heerlijke lunch. ’s Middags gingen we snorkelen wat wel vet was, maar ook spannend aangezien er haaien zijn in de Nieuw Zeelandse zee.. Echter wordt er bijna nooit iemand aangevallen door een haai en is het 30 jaar geleden dat iemand gedood is door een haai.. toch vond ik het idee niet al te fijn ;) Rond een uur of 6 gingen we vissen, maar hadden helaas die dag niks gevangen. Toen we aan het snorkelen waren zagen we ook niet al te veel vissen die eetbaar waren.

’s Avonds hadden we dus geen vis op de BBQ maar wel een heerlijke maaltijd op paradijs eiland! :) Volgende dag zijn we naar een ander strand gelopen en zijn daar wezen vissen en snorkelen. Liz had een vis gevangen wat erg excited was.. hehe. Vervolgens zijn we langs de kust terug gelopen naar de bach en zijn Abby en ik weze zonnen :). Op een geven moment zagen we drie pijlstaartrog (waar Steve Irwin aan is overleden) een meter van het strand.. en dorsten toen niet meer te duiken of ver in zee te zwemmen :). Rond een uur of 4 gingen we weer vissen, dit keer in een bootje. Abby had dit keer ook een vis gevangen en een andere grote vis maar die ontsnapte, aangezien we beide geen vis helden waren, en alleen maar gilde als we iets hadden hehe en ik van de ene kant van de boot naar de andere rende waardoor de hele boot heen en weer schommelde en het moeilijk was de vis van de haak in het net te krijgen. ;)

Om 6 uur zou onze boot komen, maar kwam uiteindelijk pas rond half 8 aan. De terug weg was een stuk beter want de zee was bijna vlak. Hoewel de zee bijna vlak was voelde ik me nog steeds niet al te goed maar gelukkig niet zo zeeziek als de heenweg.. in ieder geval heb ik niet echt zeebenen :).

Zondag zag ik Mike weer na twee weken en maandag ochtend gingen we naar de Mount om de zonsopgang te zien, ook erg mooi! ’s Middags reden we terug naar de bach in Rotorua. Mike en ik gingen bramen plukken om een taart en Jam te maken.. en Mike wist een pad van vroeger.. helaas was het pad vrij dicht gegroeid en konden we het pad in het begin niet vinden.. waardoor we in onze korte broek door alle bramenstruiken en prikkeltaken moesten lopen.. mijn hele benen zitten nu onder de rode krassen... maar we hadden wel veel brammen kunnen plukken.. en net voor de normalen weg hadden we het pad gevonden ;)

Gister had ik afgesproken met Els en Florry die nu ook in Nieuw Zeeland aan het reizen zijn.. We hebben wat gedronken en geluncht bij zippy’s in Rototua, zijn vervolgens naar de mudpools gegaan en naar de Bach. Els, Florry en ik zijn gaan zwemmen in het meer.. je kunt naar een strandje zwemmen en als je een kuil graaft heb je een warm waterpool.. als je diep graaft is het echt kokend heet water.. ’s avonds hadden we een BBQ en zijn daarna met de boot naar de hotpools gegaan. Erg chill en gezellig.. fijn om wat Nederlands gezelschap te hebben. Mike en ik wouden ze meenemen op de Kaituna Rivier in een Topo Duo, maar hadden daar vandaag helaas niet echt tijd voor en Mike heeft zijn arm een beetje geblesseerd. Waarschijnlijk gaan we ze nogmaals ontmoeten als wij weer terug zijn van het Zuid eiland. We vertrekken vandaag, in een paar uur, naar het zuid eiland dus ik denk dat ik maar mijn spullen moet gaan pakken. Erg veel zin om te helikopter kajakken en het zuid eiland te zien!

Hey hier zijn wat fotos van de afgelopen dagen.
Dit is het uitzicht van een zonsondergang vanuit de bach in Rotorua..

Ik was samen met de moeder van Mike meegegaan op een kiwi trip. Het mannetjes kiwi zorgt niet goed voor het ei en daarom halen ze het ei uit het nest en nemen ze het mee om te verzorgen zodat deze uit komt. Helaas had het mannetje zijn werk al niet goed gedaan en groeide er nog geen embryo..

We hebben een uur in het bos gewacht tot het kiwi mannetje zijn nest verlaat. het mannetje en vrouwtje hebben beide een eigen nest. De kiwi heeft geen vleugels dus kan niet vliegen. Het nest is vrij diep ongeveer een meter.. het ei lag verstopt meer achterin het nest, maar we hebben even geposeert met het ei..
het is een vij groot ei.. en ongeveer 1/3 van het gewicht van het kiwi vrouwtje.

Het was vrij bezijonder dat we meemochten, er leven maar 3 kiwi mannetjes en 1 kiwi vrouwtje in het bos bij Tauranga. Vaak nemen ze niemand mee en het gebeurt niet vaak dat er een ei is.

Gister ben ik weze vissen, was echt heel tof.. het verhaal en foto krijgen jullie nog te horen/zien!
Vandaag ga rij ik naar Rotorua en slaap een nachtje in de Bach. Donderdag avond kom ik weer terug, en vrijdag avond gaan we naar een eiland 20 km van de kust! Woop Woop!

Tauranga

Hey hey
Geen nieuwe foto’s dit keer maar een klein verslagje van de afgelopen dagen/ weken ;)

Mike is momenteel in Australië en ik verblijf in Tauranga bij de ouders en zus van Mike. Vorige week dinsdag heb ik hem en Ciaran bij het vliegveld achtergelaten en ben naar Tauranga gereden.

De afwisseling van de bach bevalt me erg goed aangezien ik hier lopend of fietsend naar het centrum kan en het strand.. een stuk meer vrijheid dan de bach.

Woensdag begon ik mijn stage bij de University of Waikato. De eerste dag had ik het erg druk met een 10 minuten gesprek met mijn stage begeleidster over wat ik precies zou doen en een dvd kijken over wat de universiteit precies doet. Toen de dvd was afgelopen en ik mijn stagebegeleidster ging zien, was ze al vertrokken (half 12 ‘s middags) en hoorde ik van mijn collega’s dat ze er pas weer volgende week woensdag zou zijn.. en ze had me helemaal geen opdracht, instructies of iets gegeven.. he he..

Ben toen met de moeder van Mike wezen lunchen in een geweldig sushi café en vervolgens maar naar huis gegaan..
Maandag besloot ik te stoppen met de stage aangezien ik niet echt gevoel had dat ik er iets kon leren en ik mijn tijd daar eigenlijk verdoemde.. aangezien mijn stagebegeleider er pas woensdag was besloot ik de dinsdag maar vrij te nemen en naar het strand te gaan :). Stuk beter dan werken hahaha

In het weekend was ik met Abby de zus van Mike naar het strand gegaan. Het is wel even fijn na een maand met voornamelijk jongens te leven even een vrouwelijk gezelschap te hebben :). Na het strand zijn we naar een cricket wedstrijd van haar vriend wezen kijken en vervolgens hebben we een wandeling gemaakt op papomao hills of iets dergelijks..

Één van de avonden hadden we een overheerlijk stuk zalm van de bbq.. de vis smaakt hier echt zo veel lekkerder dan in Nederland! Zo vers! Heb ook al kunnen genieten van fish and chips bij de beste fish and chips in Tauranga..

Verder ben ik samen met Abby haar vriend en een andere vriendin naar de hot pools bij de Mount geweest.. dit zijn zout water hot pools.. en heel erg chill.. Heb mijn eerste street bbq gehad in Briarley st. uhmm ben naar het strand gefietst, naar een Nederlandse winkel geweest hier in Tauranga en stroopwafels en pepernoten gekocht.. helaas de budget merken en voor veel te veel geld ;)..

Gisteren zijn we wezen fietsen/ mountainbiken rondom Tauranga wat ongeveer 2 uur duurde.. was erg cool, helaas was ik wel gevallen op een graffelweg en zit ik nu onder de schrammen.. best diepe sneden in mijn elleboog, knie, heup en schouder he he :) maar allemaal goed :).

Vandaag ben ik met Abby naar de Mount gegaan en zijn samen met een vriendin van haar, haar vader en twee Nederlandse vrienden de Mount omhoog gelopen, geluncht en gezwommen.

Morgen is er een verjaardag van een vriendin van haar en de familie, zij wordt 21 en dat wordt hier vrij groot gevierd, dus ben benieuwd.

Uhm haha verder ben ik 1 keer wezen varen in een slalom boot op vlakwater.. alleen de rivier is afhankelijk het hoog en laag getij, en ik had in de krant nog gekeken hoelaat dat was.. maar had toch niet zo een goede timing.. en moest terug hard tegen de stroming in peddelen.. en ongeveer 20 meter voordat ik was waar ik begonnen was en waar mijn Teva’s lagen was het te ondiep op te peddelen.. dus heb de laatste 20 meters moeten lopen ;)..

The batch

Hey al weer een blogpost van mij! ;)

Vorige weekend waren we nog in Otaki en hadden de jongens een slalom race voor de NZL selectie.

Mike die ging niet zo goed maar heeft de team alsnog gehaald.. Zondag middag vertrokken we uit Otaki en reden we richting de Bliss-Sticks fabriek. Samen met Louise, Ciaran en Mike hadden we een bbq met de eigenaren van Bliss-Sticks, Coke en Charles. Het was echt super cool om de fabriek te zien en Coke en Charles waren erg gastvrij! We sliepen in de fabriek en de volgende ochtend hebben we een boot gebakken. Een mooie limoen groene Mystic.. erg indrukwekkend om het hele proces van het maken van een boot te zien..

Mike had geregeld dat ik een boot in bruikleen kon krijgen, zodat als we naar het zuider eiland gaan ik een creeker heb. Onlangs had ik Louise Urwin haar mini Mystic mogen lenen, maar het is toch fijn om een eigen boot te hebben. Ze hadden deze boot over omdat iemand om een mango kleurige boot had gevraagd, maar Coke en Charles vonden de kleuren mislukt en hebben een nieuwe voor diegene gemaakt.

Die middag gingen Mike en ik een rivier peddelen in de buurt van de fabriek wat echt een hele leuke rivier was. Het eerste stuk was wildwater II, III en het tweede stuk was denk iets van wildwater IV met één pittigere passage erin.

Dinsdag middag vertrokken Vavra en Ivan die ook in de batch woonden naar Australia en daarom gingen we die ochtend nog wakeboarden achter een boot voordat ze zouden vertrekken. Erg nice al duurde het 5 pogingen voordat ik eindelijk kon staan. Heb ook de boot gevaren want je hebt hier geen vaarbewijs of iets nodig. Na het wakeboarden zijn we nog naar de hot pools gegaan en daarna hebben we ze naar het vliegveld gebracht en zijn we zelf Rotorua in gegaan.

Een andere dag gingen Mike en ik de Kaituna weer peddelen alleen de kleppen van de stuw staan nog altijd open en de Kaituna staat erg hoog. De waterval wordt met hoog water lastiger om te varen en heeft wat meer consequenses als je de lijn mist.. Boven aan de waterval was ik eigenlijk best zenuwachtig omdat ik het met laag water al moeilijk vind om de perfecte lijn te varen en Mike had me van te voren verteld dat als je niet goed gaat je op de bodem wordt gedrukt en dat je dan soms je kano echt een beetje van je af moet duwen.. En uiteraard ging het dan ook mis :) ik ging van de waterval te ver rechts of te veel in het midden ik heb geen idee.. in ieder geval landen ik niet ver genoeg, sloeg ik om, werd mijn peddel gelijk uit mijn handen geslagen, en trok ik eigenlijk direct mijn spatzijl.. toen werd het donkerder en donkerder en duurde het eventjes voordat ik weer boven was.. Mike was er gelijk en vertelde me om naar de kant te zwemmen en hij ging achter mijn boot en peddel aan.. het duurde eventjes voordat ik mijn boot geleegd had en weer verder kon gaan want het was niet erg makkelijk om mijn boot te legen op die plek.. gelukkig was ik niet de enige die, die week was gaan zwemmen bij de waterval.. Arend Scheaftlein was de dag erna gaan zwemmen en een andere local een paar dagen voor mij.. en misschien nog wel meer.. in ieder geval wacht ik denk even tot de rivier weer gezakt is voordat ik weer ga :). Volgens mij is dit wel mijn eerste zwempartij ooit of in ieder geval in een hele lange tijd.. vorig jaar in Corsica ben ik wezen zwemmen ook door een waterval.. maar doordat mijn spatzeil inklapte.. dit was volgens mij de eerste keer dat ik echt naar mijn lus greep.. en ben eigenlijk wel blij met deze ervaring!

Donderdag reden Mike en ik eerst langs Cambridge om Mike zijn slalom boot op te halen die hij 4 maanden geleden vanaf Europa had verstuurd en vervolgens reden we door naar Tauranga waar ik een afspraak had met Barbara van de Universiteit van Waikato. Ik ga hier mijn stage volgens voor de komende maanden! Dinsdag vertrekt Mike voor drie weken naar Australië en verblijf ik de komende drie weken in Tauranga.

’s Avonds zijn we naar de Store gedaan voor Margareta avond omdat Arend de volgende ochtend zou vertrekken. Vrijdag avond hadden we een BBQ met de buren. De buurman is nummer twee meest invloedbare persoon van Nieuw Zeeland en zijn ouders waren Nederlands. Hij had zelfs Nederlandse dropjes..

Gister was er meer Family van Mike en heb ik zijn broer voor het eerst ontmoet. We zijn wezen zwemmen en hadden weer een mega goeie bbq s’avonds..

Vandaag ben ik voor het eerste wezen slalom peddelen! En eigenlijk vond ik het wel erg leuk.. In ieder geval is het leuk dat ik tegelijk met de jongens kan peddelen en het is uitdagend, want het is best lastig.. Vandaag zouden we naar de Wairo gaan om te peddelen maar zijn we uiteindelijk niet heen gegaan.

Dat was het zo wel weer een beetje :) Ik ben volgens mij sinds de laatste keer niet meer wezen freestylen. Hoewel de wals nu goed blijkt te zijn met hoog water..

Hey hier al weer een update van mij ;)

Afgelopen weekend hadden de jongens een slalom wedstrijd die telde voor de Nieuw Zeelandse selectie. Ik ben meegegaan om foto’s te maken en rond te hangen. Helaas regende het heel de dag. Zaterdag avond stormde het echt heel hard, het heeft de hele nacht geregend en het waaide echt mega hard. Alle Nieuw Zeelandse kajakkers hebben het weerbericht in de gaten gehouden want het komt niet vaak voor dat het zo hard regent in de zomer en er een kans was dat er creeks vaarbaar zouden zijn. Mike had geregeld dat ik met wat mensen mee kon creeken met mensen die volgens hem niet zo wild varen en die een rivier zouden varen die ik aan kon. Hij zelf had zondag nog een wedstrijd dus kon niet mee.
Zondag ochtend heeft hij me om 8 uur naar Phill Mac gebracht met wie ik zou meerijden naar de creek, hoe de rivier heette ben ik al weer vergeten. Onderweg moesten we nog een sleutel bij een boer halen, want het was een privé weg. Pas na 11 zaten we op het water en was het de eerste 10 minuten een riviertje van z’n 2 meter breed wat lijkt of het normaal niet meer water in zit dan de polders in Nederland en stroomde het zachtjes. Na een paar km begon de rivier echt met gelijk een pittige passage in het begin. We waren uiteindelijk met een groep van z’n 15 man en hebben ongeveer een uur bij die passage gestaan.. ondertussen regende het al de tijd nog behoorlijk hard en was de rivier nog steeds aan het opkomen.. uiteindelijk besloot ik het niet te varen omdat het me allemaal te lang duurde en droeg ik de passage alvast over.. gevolgd door een paar andere die ook al zeker waren dat ze hem niet gingen varen.. twee besloten de passage te varen waarvan de eerste goed ging en de tweede beneden in een wals kwam en gelijk ging zwemmen. Omdat de rivier full-on door ging is niemand achter zijn boot aan gegaan en is hij zowel zijn boot als peddel kwijt geraakt.

Ondertussen waren er al een paar mensen terug naar de auto’s gaan lopen en besloot ik ook terug te lopen.. uiteindelijk besloten ook de andere terug te lopen omdat ze de rivier nog nooit zo hoog hadden gezien en het te heftig was… We liepen dus met ze alle terug naar de auto’s wat z’n klein half uur lopen was.. Mijn eerste Nieuw Zeelandse creeking missie :)

Toen we terug bij de auto’s waren bonden we de boten op en reden we naar een andere rivier.. hier waren nog meer kajakkers op de kant. Wat bleek al de rivieren stonden te hoog op te peddelen. Uiteindelijk hebben we toch een rivier gevonden met slides die te varen was. De eerste 10 minuten was het zo goed als vlak maar ging door de bomen en bladeren door.. soms had je niet eens echt een doorgang en moest je voorzichtig door de takken en bladeren varen.. De eerste slide was z’n 100 meter.. vervolgens was de rivier wat rustiger met nog steeds hier en daar wat takken en bladeren waardoor we moesten.. vervolgens was er een watervalletje van z’n 5 meter.. en daarna was er een waterval van 8 meter die nog nooit bevaren was.. uiteindelijk was het een best leuk runnetje. De moeder van Shaun haalde ons op met een pickup truck waar we met 10 boten en mensen op konden. We reden 10 minuten door hun boeren land met overal herten.. zo cool omdat je zulke dingen niet vaak mee maakt. Zijn familie was super aardig en we kregen eten.. Uiteindelijk was de dag dus best cool.. De slalom wedstrijd was niet door gegaan omdat het water te hoog was.

Nu ben ik in Otaki sinds gister en verblijven met ongeveer dertien man bij Louise Jull haar ouders huis. Op de weg hiernaar toe hebben we een wandeling gemaakt van ongeveer 5 uur, over een vulkaan. De wandeling duurde vrij lang omdat we veel foto’s hebben genomen. Het was echt een hele vette wandeling en we hadden erg mazzel met het weer, omdat het toen we boven op de berg aan kwamen het helemaal open trok.
Wat ook vet was, was dat op de top de aarde op sommige plekken echt super warm was vanwege de vulkaan.. sommige stenen kon je bijna niet vast houden so warm waren ze!

Volgende dag gingen de jongens trainen en heb ik de ochtend weinig gedaan.. in de namiddag gingen Mike en ik op zee peddelen in een slalom boot. Toen we ongeveer 2 km van de kust waren zei Mike zullen we terug gaan want ik ben bang voor haaien.. maar ik weet niet of hij dat zei om mij bang te maken of dat hij het meende.. Hij legde me toen uit dat je vanaf waar we lagen het Zuider eiland kon zien.. en toen hij aan het vertellen was ik alleen maar om me heen aan het kijken in de zee.. en opeens zag ik een mega vin verderop.. bleek er een orka te zwemmen! Echt heel vet maar ik was wel een beetje bang.. Mike die wou dichterbij gaan en ik was te bang om alleen te wachten dus was ik maar met hem mee gevaren maar de orka ging te snel.. we hebben hem wel echt goed kunnen zien maar gelukkig van een veilig afstandje.. wel echt heel vet! Waarschijnlijk gaan we deze week nog een keer, en hopelijk zien we er dan weer een.. maar gebeurt niet zo vaak dus we hadden erg geluk!

Toen ik net terug was bij de Jull’s vroeg Louise of ik mee wou kanopoloen die avond.. Ik voelde me een beetje out of place.. brak hier en daar wat regels omdat ik de regels niet kende.. en het voelde of ik een beetje in de weg lag in het spel.. maar de meiden zeiden dat ik het goed deed en snel op pakte.. ;)

Vandaag heeft het heel de dag weer geregend.. de jongens hebben ’s ochtends gepeddeld en ik heb in de regen gewacht.. ’s middags zijn we naar een café gegaan en ’s middags gingen ze weer peddelen en heb ik weer gewacht.. na hun training was het vrij en ben ik even in mijn Freestyle boot de rivier af gegaan maar was niet heel spectaculair..

Net gegeten en hopelijk gaan we vanavond nog iets doen.. misschien naar het strand of de film.. zondag gaan we weer terug naar Rotorua en rijden we langs Bliss-Sticks om een boot op te halen.

Mijn stage ga ik misschien bij een universiteit in Tauranga doen.. de moeder van Mike heeft me geholpen want je hebt connecties nodig in Nieuw Zeeland om ergens een baan te krijgen.. ;)

Hier dan eindelijk een blog update..

Alles gaat goed hier.. vooral de eerste paar dagen veel gedaan en al veel van Nieuw Zeeland gezien. Ik heb totaal geen last gehad van een jetlag en verandering tussen winter en zomer bevalt me prima. Het klimaat is hier echt perfect over dag is het warm maar niet te warm en ’s avonds koelt het goed af zodat je goed kan slapen..

De eerste dag in Nieuw Zeeland hebben we een berg gewandeld, vervolgens zijn we gaan zwemmen in de zee met echt perfecte golven om te body surfen, echt heel vet! Vervolgens zijn we gaan lunchen met Mike zijn oma en reden we daarna richting Rotorua met een stop bij de Kaituna Rivier. Mike en Ciaran zwommen naar beneden en ik peddelde in mijn Freestyle Kayak. Vervolgens toen we bij de Batch waren ging Mike hardlopen en ben ik mee wezen mountainbike wat zwaarder was dan ik dacht. :)

Verder ben ik wezen windsurfen, naar natuurlijke hot springs geweest, waar je alleen met dingi kan komen. Het hele gebied hier heeft overal warmwater bronnen, en borrelende modderpoelen, gijsers en allemaal aanwijzingen dat ze hier op een vulkaan leven.

We zijn ook een ochtend vroeg gaan surfen met Arend Scheaftlein die ook een SUP had. Ik ben alleen in mijn Freestyle Kayak gegaan, maar wil zeker nog een keer terug om ook de SUP te proberen.

Verder gaat het niet zo vlot met mijn stage.. en moet ik over twee weken weer bellen om te kijken of ze iets concreter kunnen zijn. Ik heb wel al gewerkt door foto’s te maken van de Topo duo trips die Sam en Mike doen en heb zelfs al Kayak instructie gegeven een halve middag op een meer en de Kaituna.

We zijn ook naar een leeuwen park geweest maar dat viel een beetje tegen aangezien er twee leeuwen in een grootte kooi lagen te slapen en een baby leeuw die vol van de drugs in een kleine kooi lag op de schoot van een man en die je door de kooi kon aaien.. Helaas moesten we er ook nog eens 30 NZL dollar voor betalen :) achja.

We zijn ook nog naar bleu en green lake geweest.. Huka Falls en Aratietia.

Afgelopen weekend was er een race de Andy Duff Memorial Race.. waaraan ik heb meegedaan.. De race start met 70 man die stroomopwaarts peddelen tot dan er een touw omhoog wordt getrokken en dan raced iedereen naar beneden.. er zijn 5 categorieën.. Ik deed mee aan de Freestyle, creekboat en Topo duo.. en zwom de rivier halverwege naar beneden met al de vrouwlijke locals. Erg vermoeiende race!

Hoop dat alles ook goed gaat in Nederland.. zal proberen vaker een update te geven.. maar betwijfel of dat gaat lukken ;)

Safety-Slide prevents drowning at lowhead dams
The first Safety-slide was successfully put into use at the Langeslag lowhead dam in Laag Zuthem, and demonstrated in the presence of Jan Laarman, member of the Groot Salland Water Board, and a number of white-water safety experts. The Safety-Slide developed by Oranjewoud takes away the danger of drowning at weirs.

The water behind a lowhead dam (weir) poses many extreme dangers. A tragic rafting accident on the Berkel river in September 2007 in the Netherlands is proof of that, two rafters did not survive that accident. This accident was not an isolated incident, as dozens of people died in accidents near similar dams across Europe last year, and the US has also seen many such accidents.

Water boards across the country are opening waterways up to recreational users. This is a welcome development for society, but it does come with certain risks and responsibilities. At hydraulic engineering installations, such as lowhead dams, pumping stations, and inlets, in particular, improvement of public safety is often desired or even necessary. Oranjewoud’s Safety-Slide now offers a solution that ensures the highest possible level of safety, also with recreational use.

With the Safety-Slide, Oranjewoud found the solution to this safety problem in water flow behavior behind the lowhead dam. By building a horizontal plate (Slide) behind the dam, the flow of falling water is diverted in a horizontal direction at an earlier point. A thin layer of rapidly flowing (shooting) water will build up on the plate. This shooting water will flow off the plate and will then be slowed down by the calmly flowing water around the plate. This transition from shooting to calmly-flowing water eventually creates a normal hydraulic jump. A normal hydraulic jump has a much weaker circular flow and does not pose any additional danger to people on top of the usual risks of (flowing) water. This principle is applicable at both fixed and movable overflow dams. The Safety-Slide is patent-protected, patent number: 1036143.

Herfst is niet mijn favoriete seizoen van het jaar..
Hoewel het begin van de herfst vele kleuren brengt en erg mooi is, verandert het snel tot grouw, grouwer en grouw!
Echter heb ik een perfecte zomer gehad dit jaar! Amerika, Italy, Oostenrijk, Frankrijk, Nederland, Duitsland, Italië, Slovenië, Nederland, Frankrijk, Nederland, Oostenrijk, Duitsland en Tsjechië..
Binnenkort staat er al weer een reis geplant naar of Duitsland of Frankrijk..
Tevens zal 2011 goed beginnen met een reis naar Nieuw Zeeland vanaf begin januari :)!

Adidas Sickline Extreme Kayak World Championships 2010

Dit jaar vond de vierde Adidas Sickline Race, ook bekend als de Wereld Kampioenschappen extreme kajak, plaats in het gezellige dorpje Oetz in de Ötztal vallei.
De race vind plaats op de wel bekende "Wellerbrücke strecke" op de Ötztaler Ache rivier en is hiermee een van de zwaarste races ter wereld. De race brengt een nieuwe strijd tussen de snelste slalom kajakkers en de beste wildwater kajakkers.

De wedstrijd begon op vrijdag met 150 man vanuit 26 landen aan de start. Het kwalificatie traject was na de teleurstelling van vorige jaar verandert en begon nu halverwege op de Wellerbrücke en was z'n 500 meter lang. Een zeer leuk traject!

Dit jaar waren er 8 meisjes aan de start die streden voor de titel 'Adidas Sickline Queen'. Het kwalificatie traject duurde gemiddeld z'n 80 - 100 seconden. Na mijn eerste run stond ik 54ste en mocht ik me, als enigste meisje, klaar maken voor mijn tweede run (top 90 mocht een tweede run). De top 48 zou door gaan naar de finale en omdat ik hier maar 6 plaatsen vandaag was, was ik enorm gemotiveerd om nog eens een zelfde run te doen of het liefst nog sneller!! Helaas ging mijn tweede run minder en verloor ik enkele seconden in de 3 meter drop (champion killer genaamd). Vervolgens wou ik mijn fout goed maken en probeerde sneller te peddelen, helaas hielp dit niet want in plaats van het water te gebruiken en de snelste lijnen te volgen was ik alleen gefocust op snelheid en klopten de timing van mijn slagen niet meer waardoor ik 6 seconden langzamer was dan mijn eerste run, maar als nog bijna 3 seconden sneller als Anna Hübner die tweede werd van de vrouwen en 111 in het eind klassement. Een kleine teleurstelling na mijn run, maar ik was alsnog super tevreden over mijn 81ste plaats! Tevens had ik mezelf enorm verrast aangezien ik er niet voor train en maar 6 of 7 seconden verschilde met de top mannen! Ik denk dat ik mijn resultaat behaald heb door het les geven bij Europagaai. Tijdens de interne opleidingen van Europagaai en het lesgeven tijdens de wildwater cursussen van EP wordt er veel aandacht aan de technieken besteed, hierdoor heb ik mezelf kunnen ontwikkelen en kan ik race in races als de Sickline, Teva Games in Vail, USA en Italië.
'S avonds werd ik gekroond als Adidas Sickline Queen en won ik het gouden hard van Tirol samen met een tas vol Adidas goodies en een helm.

Zaterdag waren de finales waarin Sam aan het eind van de dag de snelste tijd behaalde en het nieuwe record neer zetten. Sam Sutton (NZL) plaatste eerste met een tijd van 58,4 seconden gevolgd door Michelle Ramazza (IT) op twee. Lukas Kalkbrenner (DE) bemachtigde brons.

Naast de race was er zoals altijd weer genoeg te beleven aan de kant.. met gratis massages voor de sporters, diners, big air ramp en uiteraard het grote Adidas Sickline feest in het nieuwe chique area 47. Tevens hadden we een super chique appartement gehuurtd met wat vrienden met zelfs een sauna erin die we dagelijks na het varen hebben gebruikt.

De race was weer super classic en de organisatie heeft er weer een super goed evenement neer gezet. Ik kijk uit naar 2011 wat waarschijnlijk groots zal worden!

Back in The Netherlands! & waves!!

Since end May I have been travalling to USA and trough Europe.. I just got back home in the Netherlands for about a week.. and had a sick trip! The best thing is that it's not over yet as in two weeks I'm heading of to th French Alps and maybe Ljubljana after... Anyway its always feel good to be back home!

Last weekend we finally were lucky with the ocean waves in the flatlands! No flat ocean but some sweet waves about 3+ meter high! There was a storm alarm on Wednesday and in the east of The Netherlands they were hit quite badly.. Thursday I headed to the beach with my sister and we had a sick day.. although it was quite hard to paddle behind the waves, it was all worth it! After catching 3 waves I was too tired and even a bit scared as the waves were huge and I was alone in the waves far in the sea.. ;-)

Friday the waves were smaller about 2+ meter.. Me and my sister took the camera and made some pictures in the morning.. the waves doesn’t look so big as it was the first row of breaking waves.. as the camera couldn’t reach the second row, which were twice as big and super sweet!!
The whole weekend I had to teach from 10h00 to 17h00 which was sweet on Saturday as the waves were still awesome.. but Sunday the waves dropped a lot…

European Championships, Lienz - Austria

After Italy and two extreme races, I headed together with Casper and Raoul from Italy to Austria for the Freestyle European Championship 2010 in Lienz.. After the price giving of the Teva race we had our last Italian pasta in a restaurant and drove up to Lienz.. We again drove whole nigh and got in Lienz around 3am. Next day we had our team training at 6 o’clock in the afternoon which was sweet as we could sleep in a bit.. We just had 25 minutes training, which wasn’t very long.. I wasn’t very motivated to compete in a freestyle competition.. as I was enjoying the creek a lot! I didn’t paddle in a hole for such a long time.. and it just felt so wet ;)

Next day it was quite the same.. just chilling and having 25 minutes training with 12 people.. 2 minutes each! Sick! :).. same day was the openings ceremony, which was one of the coolest we have ever had.. due some free food and drinks all Europeans went crazy and started off with a big party!!

Wednesday the qualifications started for the C1, Junior men and K1 woman.. In the K1 woman there were some surprising score.. as some favorites for the title and great paddlers didn’t made the cut! Querine and me got both in the semi-finals with Querine on 1st place and me in a shared 9-10 place!! Our Dutch junior guys unfortunately didn’t made the cut.

Thursday it was on for the men’s, the Dutch guys were a bit unlucky with Casper van Kalmthout getting on 22th place, Remi Wegman on 25th and Raoul Collenteur on 27th. James Bebbington and Mathieu Dumoulin had the highest rides of the men’s, sick!!

Thursday we had a sweet losers party in ‘The Wha’ which was super fun.. I didn’t stay to long and went to bed at 2 am as I had semi finals next day.. The semis went okay for me and I got through to the finals in 2nd place.. my sister had a lot of pressure on her as she got 1st in the qualifications.. unfortunately she had a hard time throwing down het moves and ended up on the 10th place.. Friday there was a party again.. and I tried to take it easy again and ended up in bed around 3 am.. parties were fun again, it’s so good to see people again after a long winter!

Finals day.. I didn’t mention yet but it was raining everyday! On finals day they expected 90% rain! Luckily the morning started good without rain.. The junior woman started the day, with Sandrina winning the title again of European Champ junior woman 2010.. in de junior men’s the honor went to the Spanish junior…. In the woman Marléne won with a big ride! Myself got 4th, unfortunately not a podium place but I was quite stoked about getting 4th without training and partying hard again ;).. In the senior men’s there where sick rides!! Peter Csonka won the competition!! Which I think he really deserved.. Mat Dumoulin got 3rd just behind James Bebbington a.k.a. Pringle who got the silver medal!

In the evening we had dinner with all participants again.. Austrian Schnitzel with Kartoffelsalat ;) which actually was pretty good.. most people looked so tired after parting for three days in a row.. but everybody still got in the mood! I ended up in bed at 6am.. and woke up at 10am. again to drive once again to the next destination…
We drove to Severing and Leonie Habblings parents home.. and got threaded so well by them!! We got some delicious dinner, coffee, breakfast.. The family is really cool and is was very nice to be out of the rain sleeping in a hammock or mattress in a warm house!
We are now on our way to the Natural Games in Millau.. on our way we had a good session on Hawaii on almost 900cms and 700cms.. Sick!!

Teva Extreme Outdoorgames, Chiusella - Italy

After my super sweet trip to the TMG in Vail, I arrived 9am at Amsterdam airport. I headed back home to repack my stuff for the next trip towards Italy.. After about 6 hours home I went, with my 4 bags, tent, paddle and my creek boat, by train to Leiden station where I got picked up by Raoul Collenteur. We drove up to Casper to finally drove up to Italy. Again I didn’t had any sleep for more than a day.. luckily we had made a bed in Casper his car and I could sleep about 2 hours! Sweet ;).. I woke up in the middle of the night and I had the feeling as I was still in America.. to less sleep and too much travelling, I got so confused..

So again after 2 hours sleep in 2 days we arrived in Italy.. and as the competition was started the next day.. We needed to paddle the run to know where to go as you couldn’t see from the road.. We did a first run and got told the finish was just after the bridge.. the run was okay but I was quite tiered and didn’t felt very comfortable in my boat.. Casper and Raoul did another run and found out the finish was about 1 km further.. The afternoon we did the run again, and it was too long to remember!

Next day was the competition day.. after 1 run practice I had still no idea about the line as it was so long.. I needed to do another run in the morning.. after two runs I still wasn’t sure about the lines but there was no time left.. My run went pretty bad, I was so tired due the lack of sleep for more than a week! And I didn’t really knew the lines.. I anyway ended up 2nd just a few seconds behind Anna Hubner from Germany.. Mike Dawson had the fastest lines in the men’s, and could hold this even in the final section ‘king of falls’ In the evening we had a sweet as dinner and free drinks!

Next day were the team races, and I had a team together with Nouria Newman and Jennifer Crimes.. We had quite sweet lines this run and it was a lot of fun! The afternoon we headed to Ivrea as the next competitions were going to be held up there.. The water was super high which made the course quite pushy.. I did some paddling to try out the course and tried to get some gates, but this was so hard.. I missed almost all the gates I wanted to go for.. ha ha

Next day started the sprint.. ha ha faaaaaaaaaak I made such a stupid move.. I didn’t knew where the course was starting so I went down totally the wrong way.., which made me had to paddle through some flat water to the mainstream of the course.. It was so stupid!! I didn’t had a very fast time than.. In the afternoon was the slalom and half way down I missed two gates! The slalom paddlers enjoyed the course more than most of the white water kayakers I guess.. and were much comfortable and better on the course!

Last day was the boater cross, There were again some gates during the way, this time to touch! After the start I managed to get in first but unfortunately I missed the first gate, even had to roll.. ha ha so I just went straight to the finish..

The race was awesome.. I really liked the Chusella, long distance race.. this run was really cool! I less enjoyed the slalom course but it was nice as well.. As last the Italian culture is so amazing! People are super friendly.. I like the coffee and gelato.. and just walking in the small towns and cities is super fun!
Again a sweet trip, sweet race!

Teva Mountain Games, Vail - Colorado 2010

My trip to America for the Teva Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado has been amazing! After a long flight some waiting on the airport I finally arrived at Denver airport and got picked up by Louise Jull and Mike Dawson from New Zealand. We drove to Scott Shipleys were got welcomed super friendly by him and his wife. We arrived about 1 or 2 am... and after 2 hours sleep we woke up due our jetlag and decided to have some breakfast with eggs and bacon at half past 4 am..

After breakfast we drove up to Vail. We drove in a huge American style truck which was pretty sweet! When we got in Vail, we had 2 more days before the competition started.. the same day we checked out Homestake creek! after 28 hours with almost no sleep I didn’t feel comfortable to run the creek and I was pretty scared about the run anyways.. The guys I drove up with run it a couple of times, the afternoon I did some easy freestyle paddling in frozen water!!

With one day before the creek competition we drove up to Homestake creek again.. After an early sleep (still waking up at 4am) I felt much better and decided to give the run a go.. I still was a bit scared and decided to leave the last drop for the competition, as I wanted some safety at the last drop.. I did one run and it was way more easy than I expected.. In the afternoon I signed in for the competition and had some chilling hours which was very nice..

Thursday started the race and I was quite nervous and the only thing I wanted was to get safe down.. My run went pretty smooth, the last rapid and drop was a bit scary though as I didn’t run it yet and was racing without being sure what the water was going to do with me.. my line was quite sweet though and I made the run safe and even in second place after Tanya Faux.. The second run I was even more scared, but it turned out smooth as well and even faster than my first ride.. Tanya Faux won the race, I got on second with Nikki Kelly just behind me.. Stoked!

Next day was the freestyle competition, I didn’t do very well as I got 11nd and just didn’t made the first cut. Sunday was the 8-ball race, but due to high water this got cancelled. Before we drove up to the airport we did, together with the USA raft team a run on a volume river near Vail which was fun! On the way to the airport we stopped at a typical America restaurant and had some sweet steaks and burgers.. We slept in a hotel near the airport and woke up the next day at 4am to catch our planes.. After a mission on the airport again I finally got home next morning with no sleep and even a bigger jetlag!

Anyways it was all worth it, my trip was super sweet!! The week went by so fast but so slow as well… ;) We did a lot, and chilled heaps as well.. Thanks to the New Zealanders for the good party’s! The event is super great, it’s awesome to see different kinds of sports and hanging out in Vail! Stoked about my trip!

Hawaii sûr Rhone and Lyon city tour

A week after the World Championships in Thun, I started my internship at Kayak Session publisher in Lyon. I enjoyed my time a lot working and paddling! Unfortunately the water of the Rhone was often pretty low, and the wave didn’t run than often. In January I started a semester on a business school in Lyon.. although the university quite sucks I enjoy it a lot, and it’s nice to study abroad. Some skiing, sightseeing, parties, dinners…

'Perouge" an old French village 15km from Lyon, known as one of the most beatiful village of French.

So.. despite of good water levels, no time and cold weather I haven’t been paddling since my last session with Nouria in the begin of January. Last week I had holidays, good weather and sweet water levels!! Unfortunately my car broke down and didn’t want to start! Luckily I could borrow some cables from Toon, and my roommate her boyfriend helped me making my car working again ;).

Thursday I went paddling with Toon on Miribel which was awesome after two months no paddling! At night some Dutch friends arrived and we have paddled whole weekend on Hawaii.. Friday we paddled right channel with 1100 m³/s, awesomely awesome! ;) The afternoon we spend our time in Lyon and I gave my friends a city tour through Lyon. My roommate had cooked some sweet French dinner for us which was delicious..

Saturday the right channel was working but just for about half hour.. after lunch the water had dropped and right channel was perfect again. In the evening we went to some underground bar in Lyon.. and danced hole night long ;)

Sunday we went watching a horse riding jump competition of my roommate which was sweet to watch.. after we had our last session before my friends and sister drove back to Holland again. I already miss them ;)..

Next time when you go to Hawaii you should visit the beautifull city as well ;)

Adidas Sickline Race 2009

The Adidas Sickline race took place for the third time. The race is also known as the world championship extreme race. The qualifications where this year held on a class II. It was a quite long distance to weep out the unfit paddlers to have only the fittest left to paddle the finals on the so called Wellerbrücke Strecke.
The water level was pretty high and it was fun to paddle in this region.

The competition was fun and there where many spectators. The parties where sweet but didn’t beat the party’s of last year. Again I didn’t expect much of the race because I didn’t felt really fit.. but I did well and got about 73 out of the 113 competitors, beat about 20 men’s :). I as well got 3th out of the 6 Dutch paddlers.. and got first of the women’s so was quite happy with my score..

They award me because of the 1^st place at the women’s and give me a crown and a sash, which made me feel a bit ridiculous..

Anyways the race was good as well for the free massage at the reload center, the colactive dinner and the parties. Pity again that there were not much woman to have an official category and to have to qualification on a harder couse than a class II.

Freestyle worlds 2009

Freestyle Worlds 2009 where insane!
Before the worlds started me and my friends went to Bremgarten first to try out our brand new Jackson Stars and All Stars.. Bremgarten was pretty low, which made the wave pretty green and steep.. I hadn’t been in Freestyle for 2 months so I was so motivated to go on the water! In de begin I couldn’t even control this fast boat and it took me about a day to have control and remain in the wave..

After Bremgarten we went to Thun, to sign up for the competion. We have been so lucky with our country team training scedule! As we trained with the Belgium's who would arrive on Saturday!

The openings ceremony was quite cool this year, Rush did a great performance, there was some sweet dancing and it didn’t took that long.. which was good to ;). It was really good to see everybody again after a long time.. from Saturday till the end of the competitive there were pretty sweet parties every day, it was so much fun!

So as I hadn’t been in freestyle for 2 months I had no expectation for the competition.. I thought I wouldn’t have a change anyways and just came to party and enjoy my time in this lovely city. The qualification went oke for me and I got in 6^th place trough to the next round. Thursday night there was a film night with some nice kayaking action. Friday I did well in the competition and got through to the next round in 4^th place. Friday was orange but green which was quite nice.. Saturday I had to paddle again and got into the finals!! Saturday was the losers party which is always the worst, especialy when you have to wake up early the other day and paddle the finals!! My finals didn’t went that well, but I was very happy with my 5^th place!!
I definitely had a great time...

Trip de Wegman

Querine en ik hebben een paar weken terug Nederland verlaten voor een gezellige trip ;).
We zijn in Plattling begonnen, waar de eerste Eurocup van 2009 plaats vond. Het water stond super laag waardoor de wals erg flushy was.. De wedstrijd was dan ook vrij kansloos! Vooral bij de voorrondes van de vrouwen was het schandalig. Iedereen probeerde in het begin de gewone moves als carthweels etc. alleen dit bleek niet echt meer te gaan. Degene die per ongeluk tussen de mislukte pogingen nog een shuvit en spin hadden gemaakt, waren door naar de volgende ronden ;). In de Semi’s waren de tactieken aangepast en ging het beter. Ik eindigde op een 4de plaats.

Hierna zijn Querini en ik doorgereden naar Bremgarten. Hier hebben we één dag gepeddeld omdat de volgende dag de rivier meer dan een meter was gestegen en heel de golf weg was. We zijn toen naar Thur gereden waar we mazzel hadden met de waterstand. Een leuke en redelijk grote golf met een goede stopper! Woehoee
Helaas stond deze golf ook maar één dag goed, waardoor we besloten om richting Frankrijk te rijden naar Charnay les Chalon. De waterstand veranderde gedurende de dag constant waardoor we soms een golf hadden en soms een wals. We zijn hier twee dagen gebleven en reden vervolgens naar Sault Brenaz. Maandag zijn we naar Lyon gereden maar helaas stond het water te laag, dan maar Lyon down town in!

Onze laatste bestemming was Millau waar we uitgenodigd waren voor de Natural Games. We waren de ‘pro’ athleets en sliepen in een super luxe huisje met zwembad, jacuzzi en een geweldig uitzicht op Millau! Elke avond waren er grote concerten, Dj’s, shows en demonstraties super vet en heel Millau kwam kijken en ging los!! De wals waar de wedstrijd ingehouden werd leek op het eerste blik erg klein maar eenmaal in het water werden we verrast door een zeer leuk walsje waarin veel mogelijk was.

De Franse waren weer erg sterk in de wedstrijd. Casper eindigde op een elfde plek, Querine derde en ik ben eerste geworden. Hiermee heb ik een verzorgde reis gewonnen samen met alle winnaars van de overige sporten tijdens de Games. Mathieu Coldebella won de mannen Freestyle met hem reis ik dus naar de nog onbekende bestemming. Bon festival! Ik raad iedereen aan om volgend jaar mee te gaan! ;)

De drie weken gingen snel voorbij en hebben een goede tijd gehad! Nu tweedagen in Nederland en morgen vertrekken we alweer richting Slovenië. A bientôt.

Classic trip; Piemont, Venetië

Een tijdje terug ben ik met een aantal andere Europagaai teamleden naar Italië gegaan. We kwamen vanuit Slovenië waar we een opleidingsweek hadden en reden vanuit daar richting Val Sesia. We zagen dat Venetië op onze route lag, en konden deze culturele kans niet laten liggen.

Het was echt super vet en mooi! Typische Italiaanse gondelaars in zwart met wit gestreepte shirtjes, smalle steegjes en natuurlijk het San Marco plein!

Na Venetië zijn we naar Piemont gereden. Het water stond overal erg hoog waardoor we niet alles hebben kunnen varen. Toch hebben we wat leuke slootjes kunnen varen en hebben Senna en Stein wat mooie foto's van ons weten te maken waar we ze erg dankbaar voor zijn :).

Dutch Selection, Le, La, Der, Das, Die Têt and Donau Welle

Yeaa haww!

Afgelopen weekend selecties gehad op Le, La, Der, Das, Die Têt onze nieuwe spot in Rheinfelden.
Eerste dag stond het water super mooi daarna is het wat gezakt en was de golf iets vlakker.
Lekekr weer gehad voor bijna heel de week.. en uhmm.. vier keer politie tegen het lijf gelopen ;). Eerste politie was wel erg tof, we zijn een paar dagen naar de Donau Welle gegaan en daar hadden we onder een brug geslapen, waar we via een fietspad van 1km waren gekomen. We waren net aan het ontbijten en toen kwamen de uniformpjes aan.. maar super aardig! één van de twee is een boek aan het schrijven van zijn hoogtepunten van zijn carrière en wij komen er in hoor.. ;). Heel de week geen één boete.. mocht ook wel want toen wij de politie wouden bellen namen ze niet eens op!

Adidas Sickline Extreme Kayak World Championship.

Begin oktober was de Adidas Sickline Extreme Kayak World Championship. Dit event werd gehouden in het mooie Oostenrijkse plaatsje Ötztal.

De kwalificatie was op een stuk stroomopwaarts van de zogenoemde ‘Wellebrucke Strecke’ en was een leuk traject. Er waren z’n 120 deelnemers waarvan na de kwalificaties de top 50 <100. mee mochten deelnemen aan de boatercross op het slalom traject en de top 50 mochten de Welle Brucke varen. Ik wist nog een paar mannen achter me te laten en eindigde op de 85ste plaats. Hiermee had ik wel de snelste tijd van de vijf dames die deelnamen.

Goud ging naar de Duitser Thilo Niklas Schmitt, gevolgd door Sam Sutton op twee en de Italiaan Michele Ramazza op drie. Zaterdagavond was de prijsuitreiking en een gezellig feestje met de band Orange but Green.

Hopelijk volgend jaar wat meer Nederlandse deelnemers, maar vooral ook wat meer vrouwelijke deelneemsters.

Nederlandse Kampioenschappen '08

Afgelopen weekend vond het kajak festival plaats. Het evenement bedroeg de Nederlandse Kampioenschappen in vijf verschillende disciplines, namelijk het NK Freestyle, - slalom, -boatercross, - afvaart en de kanopolo jubileum cup. Daarnaast was er een floriders wedstrijd en werden er gedurende de hele dag clinics en demonstraties gegeven.
Het event vond plaats op de wildwaterbaan te Zoetermeer.

Op vrijdag avond tussen zeven en elf waren de voorrondes van het NK Freestyle. Per heat kregen vijf kajakkers 15 minuten de tijd, om hun vetste moves te laten zien. Als eerst mochten de mannen senioren daarna de junioren mannen waarin vooral Joery Radix erg lekker ging en iedereen verbaasde met zijn kunnen. Vervolgens was het aan de dames, Ik ging hier voor mijzelf heel lekker en gooide moves die ik nog nooit eerder gegooid had! ‘it was my lucky day!’.

De volgende dag was er overdag voor ons als kajakkers niet heel veel te doen en lagen de meeste van ons een beetje in de zon te chillen.
Rond vijf uur, tijdens het 75 jarige jubileum feest van de NKB, werd Quérine Wegman gehuldigd voor het behalen van de tweede plaats op het Europese Kampioenschap Freestyle kajakken. Daarnaast werden Robert Bouten en Ariane Herde gehuldigd voor hun behaalde plekken tijdens de Olympische spelen van dit jaar.
’s Avonds was iedereen super duf van het niks doen, maar de voorrondes van de boatercross en de finale Freestyle moesten nog gevaren worden! De boatercross is voor de toeschouwers waarschijnlijk één van de leukste discipline om naar te kijken. Met ze vijven tegelijk de baan afvaren om als eerst beneden te zijn.

Om half 10 waren de finales van het Freestyle kajakken. En met een geweldige lichtshow en zeer goede muziek zat de sfeer er goed in. Als eerst was het aan de dames en waarschijnlijk omdat het zo laat was en iedereen nog erg duf was, waren de meeste niet in hun topvorm ;).
Na de vrouwen was het aan de junioren heren, helaas had Joery die zo goed ging in de voorrondes een beetje pech tijdens de finale en eindigde als derde. Tom belande op de tweede plek en Nico veroverde onverwachts de eerste plek bij de heren junioren.
Als laatst was het aan de mannen senioren. De finales heat bestond uit 3 internationale kajakkers en nog maar twee Nederlanders. Roy die als eerste Nederlander door was naar de finale had helaas een beetje pech en eindigde hierdoor op de vijfde plaats. De laatste heat in de finale ging nog tussen Mathieu Dumoulin en Casper van Kalmthout, Mathieu stond gedurende de hele wedstrijd op de eerste plaats maar Casper wist hem in zijn laatste run toch te verslaan, en werd eerste op dit evenement.
De prijsuitreiking vond plaats in het beach house van dwd, waar tevens de party plaats vond.

Zondag waren de finales van de boatercross, dit was wederom in de avond en veel kajakkers waren al vertrokken en ook het toeschouwers aantal was een klein beetje gezakt ;-)
In de vrouwen ben ik eerste geworden de Ierse Hannah Craig tweede en Senna Spiertz derde. Bij de mannen was het de Italiaan Michele Ramazza, die goud te plakken kreeg, zilver ging naar de slalomer Ruben Bouten en brons ging naar Emiel Beukenkamp.

Zomer…

Oké ook van mij dan nog maar een kort verslag van de zomer...

1 Juli vertrokken we via Luik en Lyon naar Sort in Spanje. Hier heb ik een week gevorderde lesgegeven. Dit was best een uitdaging omdat ik voorheen alleen beginners heb lesgegeven. Na deze week zijn we via de kust, Biaritz, Baboa enz. naar Galicia gereden waar de Europese Kampioenschappen zouden plaats vinden. Toen we daar aankwamen waren er nog weinig mensen, maar dat veranderde al snel.
We zijn gelijk de golf op gegaan en hoewel we al niet zulke positieve verhalen hadden gehoord viel hij voor mij een beetje tegen. Het is echt de sloomste golf die ik ook ben tegen gekomen en was ook redelijk flushy. Na een paar dagen er op gepeddeld te hebben begon ik hem steeds leuker te vinden!! Tijdens de wedstrijd ging ik echter niet heel lekker ik was door naar de semi finales maar daar bleef het bij. Ik eindigde als 9de , een beetje een teleurstelling maar aangezien het mijn eerste senioren wedstrijd was, was ik ook niet heel ontevreden.

Na het NK gingen Querine Remi, Remko en ik richting de Franse Pyreneeën. Hier spitte we en gingen Remi en Querine richting Italië en Remko en ik, na een week niks doen in de Pyreneeën, richting de Franse Alpen om hier nog drie weken les te geven. Ik heb deze weken voornamelijk beginners les gegeven wat een goede training was, aangezien er redelijk veel mensen in de Alpen gaan zwemmen. Eén week hebben Remko en ik tijdens de rustdag een berg beklommen van 1781 meter naar 2900! Was super vet! Mooi uitzicht. Tweede rustdag hebben we de Angel gorge van de Guil gedaan.

Onze laatste week van de vakantie brachten we door in Thun voor de Thun River Jam. Dit was de finale van de worldcups. Ik vond de golf wel tof en in mijn training ging het ook wel lekker. Helaas fluste ik tijdens de wedstrijd bijna al mijn runs waardoor ik 24ste ben geëindigd. Een nog grotere teleurstelling dan het EK ;) aangezien ik dit een leuke furtur vond en het in mijn trainingen wel lekker ging. Maar de teleurstelling valt mee het is meer een motivatie om beter mijn best te doen en met de vrouwen mee te kunnen draaien. De wedstrijd had naast het Freestyle nog meer gebeurtenissen. Een Raft flip wedstrijd die Raoul, Tom en ik mochten jureren ;). En een Big Air en King of the wave.. haha hier zat ik wel bij in de finales ;)… Bij king of the wave lagen Nina, Lenka ik en een Zwitserse jongen in een creekboat in de golf.. helaas hebben de meiden niet gewonnen en won de Zwitser.

Aanstaande vrijdag een wedstrijd in België en week erop het NK. Daarna misschien de wereldkampioenschappen extreme race :). Ik heb er zin in! Europagaai en Kajak centrum Arend Bloem opnieuw bedankt !

Teva Tour

So after a month of travelling though Europe I got back to my sweet little hometown..
The time went so fast and wish not to be over jet.. but at the other hand it feels good to be back home again.

My Tour started at Lyon.. the water level was pretty low and the second pillar of Lyon has broke so the wave wasn’t as good as ever but still lots of fun.. we spend here about five days paddling.

On Saturday my brother picked me up and we went to Geneva. We did some sweet runs in the valleys nearby, rivers like the Dranse and the Dora Baltea and at night we chilled at the lake of Geneva with some friends.. Next day we went off to Italy to paddle a class V –VI river. We did about two hours for a 600 meter run. Which was fun though. Then we went off to ValSesia and here Remi dropped me and turned back to the Netherlands. I have been invited to compete at the Teva Extreme Outdoor Games, it was my first extreme race (actually no I did the team race on the Weisse Luchine as well) and was pretty excided about it… During the competition I mostly stayed at the Swiss camp with was pretty tough..;) and had a personal driver Florian Dillier who drove me up to the rivers and all around.

The rivers where a lot of fun but pretty hard to race on.. At Saturday night we had a sweet party going on with lots of drunken people and stupid guys!.. Next day was the boatercross which was nice as well.. I got three times second and once first which putt me in 1st place in the overall score!

On Monday the members of the Teva Tour arrived and we had some champagne breakfast to started the tour! I first should be the only girl on the tour 1 out of 15, but because a German guy couldn’t show up we got Anna on board.. glad not to be the only girl! The second day of the tour we did a quick run on the Equa river, same run as where the Teva Games has been held. We run the waterfall on the bottom a couple of times and Pat and Anthony swam it as well.. some bridge jumping and back to the campsite.. I think at the evening we ate some Italian carbonate pasta with was pretty good..

Day three we went to the Verzasca river. This river is a favourite by lots of people and really good for some filming and photo shoots.. The run was really sweet but took us quite a long time as we had to wait for the camera guys ‘Siep and Peer’ the hole time! ;) and at the end we all got pretty hungry.. but the run was definitely worth it, the river the rapids and the area are all so gorgeous!

Day four we decided to paddle the Melazza.. an sweet river in a big gorge.. we decided to split the Teva Tour group in two for the safety and make the run go faster.. group one walked down to the river which is a pretty long and steep climb.. I was quite happy to be at the bottom, was pretty warm and couldn’t wait to go on the water… then 3 minutes later we got a sign from the guys on top that they should or where releasing the dam and the river would be flooded.. So that meant.. we had to climb out again. I was so happy when I finally got on top again.. was so hot! My head was definitely the same colour as my boat at that moment... A quick swim with Raoul in the lake and then we went of to the Ribo.

The start of the Ribo is a 15 meter slide/ drop.. I paddled it the first time and was so stoked that I wanted to do it again, I got Anthony so far to come with me for a second run, I truly wish I hadn’t.. The walk up wasn’t really easy and at my second run I smashed my paddle to my head or helmed didn’t even felt that much though.. I was like hmm.. I might have hit my paddle to my head but not sure.. then I paddled down with some paddlers and a little bit later I felt my head and there was a big egg on it ;) From that moment I have only been wearing caps, heads and my helmed as it didn’t looked very nice.. hehe.. (luckily it was almost gone in three days).

Next day, day five we drove to Elm with on our way a stop at the river the Reuss. Here some guys paddled the waterfalls and most of us where watching and waiting.. In the evening after a long drive we got in Elm where the Straight Down Striit would be held. Here again some paddlers went paddling but many of us took a rest again.. I even couldn’t paddle as I was way to hungry by that time ;).. so we where just waiting for the other guys to be done and then we went to eat something chilling at night and went to bed.

Day six was a competition day, the Straight Down Striit.. As the water was really high they replaced the start a little lower. Before the competition I paddle the upper part with Anthony. We where so lazy and tired and we totally didn’t knew what was coming.. I think we both hit some rocks and we felt like a pinball.. hadn’t really sweet lines he he… The part of the race was fun not that difficult but really nice.. Ron Fisher got first in the men’s and I got second by the Ladies with some close races. Raoul won the Chinese race and won himself a crate of beer. Swafelaar on the podium! ;) I guess Michele Ramazza became second in the men’s and Sam Sutton 3rd all three members of the Teva Tour. In the evening a party was going on with a nice band and some Swiss locals dancing around..

Day seven we first had some breakfast at the campsite and then it was time to pack all our stuff again and heading to Versam. we did a easy run in our freestyle kayaks… felt soooooooooooooooo great (also bit weird) to be back in a freestyle kayak. definitely had missed this! The whole other crew like Camera guys, Chris, Barry and Tilo went on a raft to make some shots of the riverside. On the way we pasted some waves and hole but not really good ones and it became pretty cold.. I think this evening we had a barbeque by Pat and Anthony at James Weir his house.

Next day we went to the beautiful Medelsback. A really nice river with three waterfalls at the start and some nice small drops and rapids further down.. At the start we had some problems with the cars being parked on some privet space and I think we even got a penalty. After the run we split up the group in two and some of us did some freestyle action in a pretty lame hole.. ;).. Pat and Sam drove up to the Valserrrhein to check out a first decent 25 meter drop on the lower section. The night ended up with some games of poker, drinking and conversations…

Day nine the day of the first decent. We went to the Valserrhein as Pat and Sam wanted to have an other look at the 25 meter waterfall and probably wanted to run it.. It took quite some time, adrenaline and safety work, but they did it. Everything went well, except Sam had to get some stitches at the hospital because he busted his lip. The run after the waterfall we did all together and was pretty sweet. The gorge behind the waterfall was breathtaking gorgeous!! And I enjoyed this run really much! At the bottom we drunk some coffee and we had some European Kebab as dinner that night. At the campsite we made a lovely campfire and went to bed.. The camp site we slept was actually a really nice campsite. It was totally up in the mountains, which gave us a really nice view.. the area out the is so pretty and during the whole tour we have seen such beautiful places, like snowy mountains, rockslides, rivers, cities, flowers, birds.. nice nice!

Day ten ahh!! that was a stupid wake up, so noisy.. Finally we got up, had some breakfast and coffee, packed our stuff again and went to a swimming pool! This was so good! A sweet pool outside with kind of Jacuzzi stuff and bubbles, water massage and aquarium! Great stuff! Afterwards the swimming we droved to Brendenz in Austria. Here they release the dam once a year and lots of rookie paddlers all around Austria come to paddle this river.. we did the run as well on day eleven. When we got back of the river we had our official end of the tour champagne cheer.. and I couldn’t believe that time went so fast.. In the evening some of us went to Munich to do some night dancing on the Iceback wave but first Mc Donald’s.. fast-food it is!! We got at the wave around I guess 11 o’clock and the wave was totally green.. so pretty hard to stay on or even to try any moves.. The hole behind the wave was fun ;)!! When we where finished we dropped of Tilo at his house said goodbye and went back to the campsite.. around 4am we finally arrived back on the campsite.

Not much sleep then as day twelve started at a quarter to seven when Barry got to my tent with the phone call from the radio station as I had to do a interview for 3fm. Just took about 5 minutes and got back to my lovely bed! Woke up a little later breakfast again and packing again as well. We drove to some place in Germany as we where invited for a Orange but Green party which was sweet.. Some pirate drinking, crowdsurfing and Kebab afterwards. We slept that night at a kiddies kayak camp place where we had a really nice breakfast as start of day thirteen.

When we had finished the breakfast we packed our stuff as usually and said goodbye to Arend. He actually should come with us to Holland but because of Anna who got ill he had to bring her home.. Then the crew which got a lot smaller now drove back to the Netherlands!!! Whoehoe Yeehoee!! We first had a quick stop at the Teva store and then went in to Den Hague to show the foreigners some real Dutch food.. ‘broodje speklap’ ‘krokketen’ en ‘frikandelen’. Afterwards we went to Dutch Water Dreams to paddle on the white water course and did some flowriding.

In the evening we had a bbq at Casper’s house, big thanks to his parents who made this meal! It was really good. After this we went to the premiere of the Grand Canyon Adventure in the Omiversum in Den Hague. Anthony and Pat where in the movie as well. It was so awesome!! They started with a commercial film about a film with Elephants which was so sweet to see on such a big screen! Then the Grand Canyon movie start this was indescribable gorgeous as well! We slept that night at Casper’s parents house which was nice.. Next morning Kees and Anthony had left early and after breakfast Casper, Sam, Pat and me first went in to Den Hague for some cappuccino and then Casper, Sam and Chris went wakeboarding and me and Pat had some lunch. Finally I had managed to call Barry as I needed my stuff because my brother should come pick me up at 5pm. Then I said goodbye to the guys and headed back home. The trip has been awesome! I want to give a big thanks to Teva for inviting me for this trip! and to Palm for my gear and kajak centrum Arend Bloem and Europagaai for the support. Also big thanks to the camera guys who have made me laugh a lot! And to all the other paddlers of the Tour! Thank you guys!

Sea session

Heya folk ;)

What's up..
Haha here a short message from me..
Recently there hadn't been much waves at the sea but last weekend there was a good storm in Holland so we had to have a paddling session..
Friday Remi got home and we went to the sea.. It was so... hmm.. violent, massive, huge hehe well anyway Crazy out there.. Remi got once trough the first row of braking waves i didn't :( hehe.
Because the wind was blowing to the North we where after 5 to 10 minuts already far away from where we started.
Well.. because it was so hard to get trough the waves we stopt that day.
Next day we tried it again and two Belgium guys come over to join us and have a go on those big waves..
It was still sick and hard to paddle trought the first row of braking waves.. We all had lots of big trashes when trying to paddle out.. hehe some of them even hurt.. and that on the North sea hehe crazy!
Sunday I had to work on my project for school so I didn't went peddling.. the Belgium guys and Remi did and they told me that the waves where that day even bigger than the days begore but that it was easier to paddle out! unfortunatly I have missed that.. My sister made some pictures of us paddling.

Dutch Championships

So last weekend the Dutch Championships took place..
Friday from 9 till 11pm. there was some practice time. The hole was fun, still a bit shallow but I think they have build it pretty well it could have been a bit more sticky but it was sweet.
Friday evening after boating there was a small party and Saturday morning the comp. started around 9am.
They used the method that was used in Thun River Jam, and that was 5 paddlers get 15 minutes time and your 5 best moves get count. They only used this method in the qualifications.
From 1 till 5 there was a break and some Dutch Belgium’s and Swiss went into town to get a burger and fries.
And for the Swiss, chocolate “hagelslag” and chocolate in a tube..
At 5 the baotercross stared with the qualifications after the junior men’s finals and after that I think there was the yetski show and the Para glidersthen around 9 the boatercross semi and finals started. The woman finals and the men finals.

Around 11.30 it was finished and the price giving was around midnight. For 2 competitions I had to go about 5 times on state.. one for the Dutch Champ boatercross, then again for the Dutch champ boatercross because there was missing someone and they wanted to have a picture.. then one for the boatercross open.. one for the junior woman freestyle.. one for the woman freestyle open and once for the teva playboatcup overall.. so it all took quite a long time hehe..
After it we went to some disco called the players and had a sweet party there.

Outdoor Games

So.. we went to the Interlaken Nissan Outdoor Games.
There was no places left in the boatercross so unfortunatly I couldn't compete in that.
But I got asked for the team race by some swissy's ;) and that was sweet!
Started a bit above the waterfull till the flat part of the luchine river.
After the race we drove up the river again and did the upper part of the Weisse Luchine.
We started at a slide of 200 meter which ends in the luchine. Was a sweet day paddling.

Eurocup Lienz

Heya mates!!

The first Euro cup has come to an end.
The comp was held in a small village Lienz on the river the drau.
Although lots of pleople lately have been practizing on waves big big hole moves where showed. The Dutchies did well in the qualifications almost everybody got trough to the next round. In the evening there was a loser party which turn out really nice.
Next day quater and semis for the mens and finals.
I had incredeble much luck and ended up on an first place.

the evening we had a party again and the pricegiving which Nouria and me unfortunately missed :S॥ After the pricegiving we went
to the Stadtskeller and danced till daylight end next days paddling around Austria.
Next couple of days I have been traveling around Austria and Switzerland।
First I paddled the uper defregelsbach with two nice drops of 5 and 7 meters.
Then we went to the ötz and slept by local Sjorrschi.
Now I am in Switzerland the plan is to go tonight to Interlake for the , film competition

I got this magazine Paddling from Lars Larsson at the worlds because I'm in it. It's a article about Uganda unfortunately I can't read it because it's swedish but he told me under the Pistol Flip photo they said something like; Dutchie Martina Wegman captured in an Pistol Flip, with her youngh age 17 she paddle more agrassive than most of the guys out there.. or something like that.. It's pretty cool ;)

World Championship Freestyle kajakken Canada, Buseater – April 2007

Unfortunately there comes an end on all good things, but fortunately we can always look back at the things we go through.. cause memories stays forever ;)

It’s already a month ago that we stood on the airport and checked in our kayaks and luggage without any problems. We arrived on April the 17th in Ottawa. After Rene and Casper got check by the douane on almost everything but manly porn and drugs, we took a taxi and went to a hotel.

Next day we pick up our campervan and drove to whatever.
We first ended up by a small wave in Ottawa here we paddled for a bit, but it was pretty cold.
We decided to go somewhere else, a local told us Chambly was nice so we went there.This is an really nice wave and I think we had the perfect water level. We stayed here for about 5 days and where practising new moves and to throw them faster after each other.

After 5 days we decided to go to Forrester falls the place where the worlds took his place.
When we came there we heard that Bus Eater wasn’t running yet and that they weren’t sure if it would be there with the comp. Fortunately there are enough rivers and waves in the surrounding to paddle on. Only all the waves where really crap if you come for Bus Eater, and couldn’t think about something else ;)
Anyway the rivers where nice and we had some great time paddling and being in WT playing pool, sitting in the hot tubs and hanging out with friends.

The weekend before the competition started we went away from everything and went to the river la Rouge. Unfortunately the water was to low for the wave, but we paddled the river and that was alright, only big waves. In the evening we celebrated Remi his birthday and we went into a strip club in the middle of nowhere, where we and two old men’s where the only ones.

On Sunday was the official opening ceremony which was lots of fun. Dancing.. cheering.. awesome hehe;) In the evening we drove to Bus Eater because of the next day Bus Eater was running. We woke up at 5, dressed ourselves up in kayak clothes and went on the cold water.
There went almost 10 other people with us on the water at 5!! They are crazy hehe..
In the afternoon we had our team training with the Swiss, Spanish and Australians which was cool, Bus Eater is awesome.

Wednesday the competition started for the senior mans which was nice to watch.
Remi and Casper got trough to the finals. Vincent just missed the cut and ended up on the 23th place, but for him the parties could start ;)

Thursday morning at 9 I had to paddle in the junior woman’s I went into finals on 2nd place.
Raoul had to paddle in the third heat of junior men’s he also went into the next round on 2nd place. Casper and Remi had to paddle the half finals. Remi made a huge pistol flip in his run but it wasn’t enough to make the cut he ended on the 16th place. Casper had some nice rides and made it to the next round.

Friday last day of the competition Casper and Raoul had to paddle the quarter finals in the morning they both didn’t make the finals but ended up on some sweet places.Casper got 8th and Raoul 7th, well done!!
Around 11am I had to paddle the finals. Emily Jackson ended with 0,66 points different on the first place followed by me on the second, and with also almost no point different Nouria Newman on 3th and Flic Meares on 4th place. Local girl Katie became 5th.

In the evening there was the closing ceremony which was, as the openings ceremony again really awesome. People where already drunk and where cheering and shouting it was hilarious, enjoyed it really much :). We had a good party that night!!

Next day we paddled the Petowawaaaa river to get rid off our hangover, and then drove back to WT for an other party :) which was again crazy!! Wonder how much people got kicked out of the bar! Flo!! ;)

Sunday evening we drove to Ottawa and slept there on a gay park place.. Nahhh I couldn’t believe my eyes!! Seriously there where so much cars, and a lot of cars drove by! You saw guys walking into the grove, forest crazy.. None of the dutch guys dare to go outside of the campervan hehe.

Next day we cleaned up the campervan repaired all the things we broke. (table, mirror, closet, key, dashboard…..) brought it back and went to the airport. We had a good flight home and got welcomed by family friends and fans :)

I had an awesome time in Canada!!
I would thanks everybody for this unforgettable experience and hope to see you all again soon!

Paddles up was this year again a great success!
It was the 2nd event of the Dutch playboat cup.
Saturday the comp started with the boater cross and the qualifications freestyle men's.
In the evening was the price giving and a little party at Silverstone. Sunday was the day for all the freestylers.

FREESTYLE WORLDS SELECTIE LYON, 2007

High water, a beautiful sunshine and a big wave. We couldn’t have our team selection better than this weekend!

The selection started on Saturday but on Friday most of the kayakers where arrived. The Rhone which was last week really low was now rise till a sweet high level, which made that only big aerials where showed!!

Saturday morning we had at 9.30 a short talk and afterwards it was it was junior training. When the juniors where showing off in the wave the seniors couldn’t resist and went also on the water. A lot of people I hadn’t seen for a while and I was impressed seeing everybody doing so well! Blunts, Panams, Clean Blunts, Fisher Kings, Back Steps, Pistol Flips everything was possible;)

At 2pm the selections started. Rene watched the paddlers carefully to pick out the bests.
Everybody had two rides where you had to show 4 moves, then you had two more rides where Rene said which moves you had to make. To Finish it, you had one last ride and had to show your biggest special move you ever had made;)
In the evening we took a small session on Hawaii again and afterwards we took a big Hawaii pizza ;)

The day after I went to La Scie, which is an awesome wave when it’s running. We where not the only one who knew that. It was really, really crowdie which is fun but not when you have to wait a half hour in the eddy to have one ride on a awesome wave!
I only had 3 rides and then we drove back to sweet home Schoorl :)

#1 MESSAGE UGANDA 2007

It’s has already been a while ago that I went whit my bro to Uganda
We went out there for 2 months _ 29th of November till 20th of January.
I had an amazing time out there. Everyday paddling, parting and hanging out with friends.
The first time when I got on the water I was impressed about how big the river is, especially when you compare it with the rivers in Europe

The white Nile is so wide and it’s all big volume and big waves.
Although the water is big the lines are pretty easy.
The rapids I liked the most on the river were KaliGala, Itandra, Overtime and Budjagali Falls।

When I paddle down the river for the first time and went back to the Nile River Explorers on my boda boda I felt so on Holiday they are so cool.

We spend our times in Uganda at NRE or the Hairy Limon.
By the Hairy Limon you have Nile Special and it’s the beautifulness wave I ever paddled on.
My biggest move of the vacation is a Pistol Flip on Nile special which I stocked.
Frasse made a picture of me doing a Pistol Flip exact on the right moment I like.

Yeah I had a great time on the Nile loved the parties loved the funnels, peoples and playing ultimate shithead. And a big thanks to all the people who where out there the same time as me;) It was fun with you guys!!

Best French freestyle event of the year!
Unfortunately the water was really low but it was a sweet event.
